M22 and reverse lights...

M22 and reverse lights...

how were the reverse lights hooked up a M22 out of a 1971 442?....the top rod looks like it links back into the column?......thanks,

Yes, the back-drive linkage from the reverse lever actuates the back-up light switch on the steering column.

The same movement rotates the column collar and allows the transmission to be locked in Reverse when the ignition is locked.

As a current automotive assembly employee, one thing I love about old big 3 stuff is the variety of options you could get. Putting the column shift linkage in, even for floor shift, and just driving it at a different point was an inspired solution to offer options at low impact to the shop.

You may be giving them too much credit.

Actually, prior to the federal mandate for steering column and shifter locks, GM used a different backup light switch on the trans itself. I think it even took them a year or two to realize that with the backdrive linkage in place, they could actually continue to use the column-mounted NSS for the floor-shifted manual trans.
