local car since day one... Rare?
Last month I bought a 1968 Delmont 88 Town Sedan. This is, of course, the second and last year of the Delmont. It has the first generation 455 engine and not a single dent in the body. While it may be a ****-heap, it is a numbers matching and complete ****-heap. The story behind the car is intersting to me though. It was purchased on Pine Street here in Hattiesburg just 4 blocks from my house. The man who bought it lived on 8th Avenue, also just 4 blocks from my house. Eventually the car was sold to a local business just a few blocks over as well. When I bought the Delmont, it was only 18 blocks from my house, where it had been sitting for 20 years. The point is, the car has never left this city, in a sense... and my question for all of you is: how rare is this occurence? Do you have a similar story?

Welcome to C.O.
I would say, short of someone buying the car new and leaving it locked up in a garage for his whole life, it's incredibly rare and wierd. You should call William Shatner and tell him about it.
FYI? The Delmont does have a following. 68 was the last year before significant body changes. I really liked the flowing lines. Post some pics of your ride. I would hardly call it a ****-heap. Even if it's in rough shape I would think of it more as a challenge and opportunity.

@ Allan R - Thanks for the warm welcome, I am getting used to this site and really enjoy what I'm reading. ****-heap may be a bit strongly worded I suppose... anyway, I have not been able to find many pictures of the 68 Delmont Town Sedan, past or present, and I'm beginning to wonder if this car is rare? I would imagine most of the big body cars of the era have been chewed up and turned into waffle makers, garden rakes, and asian import "throw away after 5 years" gas saver cars...

Ha ha ha, you make it sound so appealing. It's kind of cool that it stayed so close to home. I have a 1970 car, it was purchased about 5 miles from here, worked it's way around the general area, and now is right back here with only 74k miles on it. My Cutlass was purchased in Minnesota, came to Illinois, got totaled, got rebuilt, then went to Indiana, blew the engine and sat for ten years until I towed it back to Illinois and put it back on the road. I also have a 1974 car that was purchased in New Jersey, became an utter shyt-heap within ten years, worked it's way to Illinois, and then I bought it after it had been sitting around for a few years. 24 years later and it's just about back to like-new.
BTW, they made 24,365 1968 Delmont Town Sedans, it was the most common Delmont model. That doesn't mean it's not rare today though, I don't think I've ever seen one.

My blue 64 Starfire has always been a local car. The 76 Ninety Eight, though sold new in Alexandria VA, was a one-owner car until I got it. The green Starfire lived in Massillon OH its entire life until I bought it.

My dad still owns his 1967 Chevrolet Impala that he bought new. One year color Royal Plum, but it is a 4 door hardtop. Is it rare probably, desireable maybe. He ordered it the way it sits right down to the powerglide and 275 horse 327.

A friend was at work in a gas station and a older woman came in and asked if he knew of anyone interested in buying a truck. He asked some questions and found out this truck was bought in Cape May County new by her husband, had never left the county and had less than 24,000 miles on it. He snatched it up before anyone else had a chance, and it is sweet. 1958 Chevy Apache seen below.

Actually, that's the number of '68 Delmont 88 Town Sedans with the base engine, the 350. The number of '68 Delmont Town Sedans with the 455 produced was a bit less at 20,080.
Add them together, though, and that's over 45,000 Delmont 88 Town Sedans made in 1968.
