License plate bracket

Putting the 69 olds cutlass back together. Took pics of almost everything. Didn't think I needed to photograph the license plate bracket. Put it back and it was a limp plate. Hanging almost open. I painted the spring, so I thought I screwed it up. Bought another from a friend, it did the same thing. Now I'm thinking I didn't put the spring back right. Does anyone have a diagram of how this works?
Thanks in advance.
A diagram or clear photos. I think I'm doing it wrong.

Here's one I had for sale.....maybe the first pic in my ad will help you orient the parts correctly:

the spring has to have some tension on it when inserting the hinge pin... well, torsion, to be more accurate.
