Last 6 VIN digits 1972 CS

I know that the last 6 digits are production numbers beginning with 100000. My question is this on a VIN with 129999 is this the 29999 Cutlass Supreme made so far that year? Or all of Oldsmobile for the particular plant or just a number that was allocated to a particular factory and it was the next olds built for that line in the factory. Hope I didn't mess this up bad, Just trying to figure out approx. where in the line so to speak was my CS built. Also have another with 102340 and a body number of 00019. My guess is that this one was one of the first off the line as the production date was 3rd week of August.

The starting sequence number for a particular model line depended on the model year and the plant. The chart in the front of your Chassis Service Manual will tell you what it is. Every assembly plant numbered sequentially, and they started with 100001, not 100000, so car 129999 is the 29999th A-body built at that plant that year.

So my Cutlass that was built in november of 1971 was almost 1/3 of all the A bodies built for the entire year at just the arlington plant? Did they shut down when they got to a certain point for the other plants to reach a certain point? I see the other one was built the 3rd week of August in 71 and it was 102340.

Yes, this makes sense. Cars were built from September through June or so. Late Nov would be 1/3 or so.

So "A" bodies were only built in Arlington, Tx?

Actually, I just seen a 442 out of the Lansing plant today advertised with door tag 8-71 with 8B on cowl. It was serial 100012. So by rights 2nd week of August start of production for 72
