Kids Today

Had a pizza delivered to the house. As Im paying the kid(17-20 years old) he asks, "Is that your old car in the driveway?" Is said yes. He says, "That's a cool car. I really like the paint job. What is it, a Firebird?"

Attached pic is of what was in the driveway.

At least he didn't ask you if it was a Javelin. I think they painted a lot of their cars that color.

Once I went to NAPA and asked for a carb kit for a 68 Valiant. The kid behind the counter said, who makes the Valiant?

Several times I've asked for things for a Corvair. More times than not I get, who makes the Corvair?

It won't be too awful long before kids will say, who makes Oldsmobile?

It's already happening , I asked the girl at the parts store on two different occasions for a part for my 72 CS and she replied ... who makes that .

I bet plenty of our contemparies don't know Packard, Oakland, LaSalle, Studebaker, Hudson, Rambler, DeSoto or Imperial are extinct car makes.
It won't be long before Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Plymouth, or Saturn will be forgotten by non car enthusiasts

Wow - this marks the first time the words "Saturn" and "car enthusiasts" were ever used in the same sentence!

My hobby is reaching in my pocket for change after the poor mathematically challenged kid has rung up the register that shows them how much change to give me.

I love the deer in the headlights look on their faces.

It's not just kids, it's most of the general population. I have a late model Corvette C6 ZO6 wide body. When showing it to a co-worker, had an 85' C4 Corvette parked next to it. He's in his 50's, and couldn't even tell the difference.

The Sky Redline is pretty neat, for a dying gasp anyway.

A 13 yr old friend of my son thought the Olds name on the back of my car was a play on the fact it's an old car (Old Mobile), did not know it was a real brand.

I'm suprised he even noticed it, given it's not a "tuner" car with baby buggy wheels and and a fart pipe out the back.

Yea, AZ is right next door, trotted next door and asked the guy behind the counter for internally regulated alternator from a mid 70's GM A body, 35-50 amp I got the deer in the headlights look! (reply) what make is that!
This was circa 1999

That has to be one of my biggest pet peeves (I guess because chevrolet has to plaster their engine sizes all over cars).

I went to a machine shop 2 years ago to inquire about prices, told him what car i had, and he claimed to be 'an expert' on oldsmobile blocks.

The gentleman asked "So i bet you have the 442ci engine in there huh"

I walked away, and bought an engine book. I plan to rebuild mine someday soon.

Or worse, it "has 442 horsepower." Nice thought but no...

In the mid 80's I had my learners permit and we happened to run across a '76-'77 442 rolling down the road (I was driving). My dad tried to convince me that it was a police car because it was numbered. I knew better and continued to accelerate.

My dad is NOT a car guy.

That is the one thing still to date that really drives me nuts!!! How hard is it to count change??? When I was a teen ager in the early 70's and working at a gas station people would insist on having their change counted out to the penny. If you could not count change you had no Job.

I've had a few girlfiends who have told me about nice cars they have seen. When I asked them what it was they would say something on the lines of "It was a red one".

To be fair my eyes glaze over when someone is extolling the virtues of their new golf clubs, fishing tackle, latest playstation game, finer points of their pedigree pet etc....

Roger.

Change?

You always try to stop the pumps on the dollar so you don't have to mess with change, you could usually squeeze it in if it was close.
At the stations I worked at most of the customers only wanted a dollars "woof" and they would always get premium or "Ethyl" as they called it so they didn't appear to be cheap.
The counter guys at my local NAPA have been working there for at least 40 years, they know olds cars and can count out change too.

Back in the day people always thought my '55 Ford was a Checker Marathon/ taxi cab, and it wasn't even yellow.

Bluevista, I know that all too well. 1978, I worked a full service gas station(what's that?). Every day this guy would come in and get $2.00 in premium, and a pack of Newports. Gas and cigs were just starting to bump $1.00 each. I always wondered where this guy could go on 2 bucks worth of gas in a 76? buick 225.

Long ago (when I used to pay with cash) if the total came up to 7.34, I might have given the clerk 12.34 just for simplicity (on my part, as I wanted just a 5 back). Used to blow their minds every time. My gosh if they EVER had to CARRY a number in the conversion...............
I sometimes had to tell him or her to just enter the amount in the register and it would tell you the amount of change to give me.
Yes, I was cruel to those kids, but I always wanted to rid myself of extra change and only keep larger bills. Gotta keep them on their toes on math skills, tho...

Went to autozone a few months back and asked for a set of "points". Kid at the counter said I need a membership card for points.

Had to explain what ignition points were.

Sad to see people in my generation with a lack of automotive intelligence. Being from Lansing, its even more sad to see when they don't even care what made Lansing such a huge automotive city, most of course being the importance of Oldsmobile.

Although a plus side of the younger generations working at auto parts stores is asking for a Radiator cap for a late 60's VW beetle.. It's fun to see them scratch their heads for a while. :P

Very nice Ryan, why not go the whole nine yards and ask for upper and lower radiator hoses, thermostat and gasket!

Memory serves me right, you used to work for C.Q.

Exactly. I still, say, give a 20 and a 1 for $10.56. Obviously I want a ten back and change. They just look at me like . If they can't enter it into a register,. They just don't get it.
