Just sealed a deal on a pair of Rallye 350's

Picked up a great deal on a 69 M20 Muncie with 442 shifter yesterday, tranny dates May 69 not correct but according to partial VIN did come from an 69 Olds built in Lansing and it was working fine good to go. I can live with that.
#43
I have learned a bit more about shifters this last two days and seems I have two incorrect shifters. What I got with the Rallye was a 67-69 "H" Cutlass/F85 shifter stick #3759 and of course the 69 trans has a 67-69 "442" identical otherwise #3760 . I understand the 70-72 kicks over to the side and has two versions and I need a #7305 stick.
#44
I am willing to trade the two shifters I have for the correct one , I think that is fair. On a different note, I have trying to guess and or learn what the local Oldsmobile dealers were where this car came from (Longview/Hallsville) East of Tyler and I did find out there was a very successful dealership called Lively that was around and growing at the time in Longview. It was Harris Cadillac Olds up till 67 then Lively took over and changed the name and added GMC truck in 69 and by then they grew rapidly needed a bigger lot, the place remains today as a succesful dealer. So I am willing to bet my 4 speed Rallye came from there but I still need to learn what other Olds dealer were around there in 1970, especially Tyler since it was a larger city. If I can ever get a hold of the original owners family maybe I can clear this all up.

Hadn't updated in a while, weather has been unpleasant for tinkering but did sell the #5 heads of the spare 68 350 that paid for my New cell phone . I got the New stock size tires for it finally . My first ever set of old school Cooper Cobras , probably gonna repaint wheels first but I want it rolling soon. Plan is to sand blast chassis , rear end and suspension and paint.

GEARMAN69: M14 option for 70' model year was the new 3 speed alumn. case Muncie trans. 68-69 model year had 3 speed iron case Saginaw. Saginaw at times could not keep up production during 68-69 and the Ford top loader 3 speed was used in place. Cheaprolet div. got first in line, as I think all of their 3 speed cars were Saginaw. Reason why Olds, Buick, and Pontiac divisions petitioned Muncie to start building 3 speed trans for them. Also, the shifter, mounting style, Hurst parts, etc., could be used. Chevy I believe continued to use the Saginaw iron case 3 speed, however I am not sure. Also it did not bade well with GM that they were using a Ford product!
You could get the M14 3 speed or M21 4 speed with 3:91, but not the M20.
If you ordered the 3:42 gear ratio you could order M14, M20, or M21 trans.
3:23 gear ratio you could order only M14 or M20, but not the M21. Standard ratio was 3:08 with M14 or M20, and M21 not available.
It is possible that the car could be a 3 speed. Especially that it did not have many options other than the W45 pkg. Usually cars like that stick Rallye were NOT ordered by the dealer. GM dealer contracts required dealers to take various models whether they wanted them or not. The amount of cars depended on their sales history. So dealers would order those cars as low or no option cars in order to sell them fast. As example, if it was in an area were an A/C car would sell they would order the car with the minumin required for an A/C option. That is why you see so many 2 Bbl. 350 engines with pwr. steering only in an A body with A/C. Without documentation it is hard to tell 3 speed or 4 speed! Like you I suspect 4 speed because of the 3:91 ratio.

Thanks for the input Dave! Yeah since I got a sweet deal on a 69 M20 out of a 442 ready to run for $350 and sold the shifter for $150 , I got a good drag friendly combo to use the lower geared M20 eventually at the track and have a little quicker ET for it. Maybe I will have luck getting a hold of some of the Downs family original owners one day and they have some old paperwork.

The Phord 3 speed top loader was available from 65-69 in 442 models and Cutlass models with a floor mounted shifter. The 65-66 442 top loader was available with a column shift but the option was dropped during/after the 66 model year. The reason the Phord 3 speed top loader was available in a Cutlass model was, there wasn't a shifter available for the Saginaw. So if the customer or the dealer ordered a floor shift 65-69 Cutlass/442 model,it came with the top loader. Any Cutlass model from 65-69 with a column shift came with the Saginaw. I believe the info above for 65 is correct but I yield to the 65 guys to correct me if I'm wrong.

66 3X2 442: There was a floor shifter for the 3 speed Saginaw. I had a 3 speed Saginaw in my 68' Camaro with a 327 CI 275 HP engine and it had a floor shifter, Muncie style I believe. I know for sure it was not a Hurst brand. I bought the car new after I returned from my first tour in Viet Nam on Dec 15, 1967.
BTW: I ordered from and picked up the 68' Camaro in Chi-town, at Nickey (the backwards K) Chevrolet on Irving Park Road. It took me less then an hour to take delivery, however, I spent another 1 1/2 hrs. looking at all the Camaros and Chevelles getting engine trans. plants!

Great score, cool thread. That's some project you picked-up, I applaud your enthusiasm! I always enjoy reading about forgotten Oldsmobiles being scooped-up by folks who love them. Good luck!!

Got the God forsaken two speed automatic out today with a pair of 9/16 combo wrench and a mallet. That 68 drivetrain was just laying on the cross members and with the inner fenders out it was too easy.
#58
I ordered brake hoses, wheel cylinders , shoes and KYB shocks for it on Friday from Rock Auto and they came in yesterday. Planning on getting this thing road worthy soon to play with it a bit and clean it up.
#59
Would you be intrested in letting go of that #6 head ? I picked up a motor that has a 6 and a 3 . I don't know how or if that will work so I've not to tried to fire it off.

Haven't sand blasted anything yet , noted. I was mainly just referring to heavier stuff like frame . As far as the single #6 that has 2.07/1.625 valves. I want to hold on to it for now. May use it for flow testing and make sure my other #6 heads are all good. Planning on 2.07/1.68 valves in those.

There was a single #6 head for $30 on Dallas Craigslist recently. If I can find it again I will send it to ya. Picked UP a pair of 15x7 SSIII wheels yesterday for $40 to get painted Sebring Yellow along with my original 14x7 SSII'S so I can have some slicks mounted.

Taking the hint
Had not got much done lately but after yesterday I guess I will try a little harder. A storm blew thru maybe a little tornado and swooped down and blew off the carport and threw it 200 feet along with a heavy work table. All that stuff wrecked thru by chicken pen and coup area and over to my dogs kennel smashing it but luckily no loss of chickens or dogs. All good and no damage to the Olds. I do need to round up the parts that scattered though. Calling insurance this morning I suppose.
#69
Thanks man, glad it wasn't worse. Got some parts picked up and some weeds mowed. Really need to get tires mounted and put new brakes and shocks. The main thing is get it upgraded to the garage !
#70
That sucks. We were sweating it some down here too yesterday.
There were several tornados bouncing around along with a ton of rain also.
About wiped 'em out in San Marcos. A lot of flooding and a few lost their lives.

Trying to a getting some progress I got the wheels stripped down locally by a guy using fine glass sand whatever. It worked. Trying to get the prime and paint going on that so I can finally get my 6 month old new tires on there and rolling pretty. Also having not even cracked into the dead 350 out of the hoopty I finally ordered the S/S 2.07/1.71 valves as I was at the least going to make those #6 heads decent and hope to pull the heads off and get them to the shop to clean up and get that ball rolling. I did find out I likely have one original head and the original intake per the date codes that came with car and in comparsion of the date codes on my other engine from a 2 week build earlier car to back up my decision on that being correct. So that makes me happy. That head had 2.07 intake and 1.62 exhaust, also had adjustable pushrods apparently which was weird. I use them to measure but they had a full set in it running !
#73
Thanks Jag, I am still very excited to have it. Also finally got engine build cash for machine shop and tearing into nasty dead 350 out of the gunshot Rallye that probably hasn't ran in 20 to 30 years.

Laughing , Got the heads off and on drivers side a rodent nest was a in #1 cylinder and the exhaust valve had rusted and the head fell off some time ago. Also #7 exhaust valve head had rusted and fell off too. Good reason to do the big 2.07 1.71 valves and porting just to get to good iron! LOL

I thought I would share some date code stuff on the January cars I have dealt with. My since scrapped body tag dated First week Jan parts car. One of the heads is no good due to rust in the chamber on #1 and it was date 351 of 1969 (Mid December) so that was a good reference and the original intake and one head that came on my 4 speed car are date 364 of 69 (Dec 30) and Jan 12 70 (12) for a 3rd week Jan body tag (two weeks behind other car) so it seems the intake is right at two weeks between cars which is cool and the head was just a week before body at Fisher and assuming full car assembly was done by last week of January

Car
I know this weather has been something right. I'm glad it didn't hurt the olds man that really would have sucked

Thanks for the support man, yeah it was a decent deal on Ebay. I was watching them thru Christmas then around New Years when I was ready to push the button they did a price drop ! I don't recall off hand but it was very good and free shipping. Yeah that #6 head I should have bought myself but I don't go that way much and didn't really need it but as if this week I have come closer to needing it after shop saw the horrid rust on one of my heads chambers. Things are coming allow well now.

Besides getting engine parts off to machine shop. I got the non AC alternator stuff I needed and a new PRW billet flywheel on the way. The flywheel that came with car was a Pontiac but that's ok . I wanted one anyway since I had an extra BOP bell.
