It's a boy !!!

New addition to the family as I now seem to be collecting 72 Cutlass s now with 3. Anyone know anything about this car picked it up for 5K unseen. It currently runs and drives. Has 12 bolt posi and really clean buckets and rear bench seats. Originally orange, painted silver and deliberately painted door jams green. Not sure the look they were going for there. Tell me what you think especially if you have prior knowledge of this car I can post vin if needed he only gave me 12 digits though. Texas car numbers matching 350 and I'm hoping for the W-29 option which would make the 442 badging legit. Although I have some doubts 71 tail light lenses, and shouldn't it say Cutlass on the glove box not 442 I believe in 72 the 442 W-29 option all had Cutlass on the glove. Also rear bumper cut outs I thought were for the 455 motor only. I could be wrong. He says clone in the description but he's actually not sure. Was givin to this kid by his father as a gift and he did nothing to it wants a pic up truck instead. Don't ask. It was sold to me by a friend of the family. Can't wait to read your responses I'm trying to be optimistic and hopefully I made a good deal. In my hands it will be brought back to original & back into our little Olds family.

This kid sounds like a spoiled brat. I sent him pics of my 2001 F150 XLT 4X4 real clean only 60K miles. Was gonna make a deal that way. No the kid doesn't want a 8' bed picky pants wants a 6' bed. And what ever you do don't give me a vintage muscle car I will send it back.

The car is in RI but That's a little scary wonder why it's been for sale for so long what's wrong with it and what did I get myself into now. I guess once I see it I don't have to hand over the cash lose my $500 deposit but will see. My thinking all along has been the rear, the seats, & door panels, so everything else is gravy. Keep you all posted might be a fire sale of parts coming up. Pic up 2 weeks in Delaware

Car has been listed on Oldsmobile central for a while now.
Looks good for 5k, but??? I like to see the car in person before handing over cash.

Five bolt valve covers from a 307? What are the heads?

Correct, the 442 glovebox emblem was not factory installed on 1972 cars, but it was very common to go buy one from a 1971 at the parts counter and bolt it to your 72 glovebox. I did this myself back in the day.

There was no "12 bolt" axle in 1972, so either that's a mistake or it's not original.

Door jambs look to be factory green, why do you think it was originally orange?

The PO said it was and that they painted the jams green on purpose. I thought the same thing what a lousy paint job didn't even try to cover the green jams. I asked him and that's what he told me. Originally orange then painted silver with green jams. I'm certainly not handing over the loot until I make sure. Double check that rear if it's not what it's supposed to be than there's grounds to get my deposit back. I really want it to turn out but it being for sale that long is a red flag certainly people called then checked it out. Starting to wonder if maybe it was hit and now has a frame issue. How can I tell a frame issue most likely any cracks have been covered up. what are some other things I should look for good and bad. I know 72 is not the banner year but I'm real curious what scared people away even at 8K
I do know there is no title RI doesn't issue them for cars older than 2000 that's true I looked into it he's also missing a number on the vin aren't there 13

How bout those tail lenses there from 71 I believe and the bumper cutouts aren't they for a 455 only ?

The price and pretty much the door jambs, every time I saw it and saw the green jambs I thought what a lousy paint job! If someone hacked that up like that what else is going on. One of the olds central ads has it listed at 10k!

From the pics I don't think 5k is bad but he shows rust thru on one fender, so I figure there's more, if it was a bbo w 4 speed I think it woulda been gone at 6500$

Yeah, the tail lights were mentioned above. I didn't pay attention to the bumper when I scanned the photos on my phone earlier. In any case, this car has been cobbled together. Bumper and taillight lenses are not original. Wing was not factory offered in 1972. Glove box emblem added as noted. Five bolt valve covers. Missing A/C parts. New gas tank. Blue interior panels would not have been installed on either an orange or a green car.

If someone painted the door jambs and door edges green, they would have had to completely remove ALL the weatherstrip, rubber bumpers, interior panels, kick panels, etc. I seriously doubt this was the case. Remove the door panels or peel back the kick panel edge and see if there are any traces of orange. If the cowl tag says it was originally orange, I'd be skeptical that the cowl tag has been swapped.

That thing with RI not issuing a title on old cars is fun. Lived up there and went to school. My girlfriend(now wife) had her car totaled there (77 cutlass) and had to buy a new car. Finished school and brought the car to MD. DMV looked at me like I had 2 heads as I explained. They actually called RI to confirm. Got tags and not to much in the way of problems, just stood around for an extra 30 mins.Larry

Hatfield is about 40 min from me. You looking for a road trip to Delaware to pic this baby up.
I actually called the number from that Oldscentral ad pretended to be interested. Dude sounded a little annoyed letting it go for 5K Started asking questions he confirmed the 12 bolt posi but cut me off after that saying he took a deposit off some dude (me) and he has my number if it falls through. Maybe I will let it fall through let him call me and offer 4K
He didn't recognize my number because he has a friend of his selling it from a caddy dealership.
