Interpreting Date Codes
Interpreting Date Codes
Can anyone recommend a GOOD book or manual that explains
how to translate date codes on all the different parts,
i.e. engine blocks, cylinder heads, exhaust, manifolds, intake manifolds,
starters, alternators, transmissions, rear ends, etc, etc.
I'm mainly interested in 1972 and older.

One booklet that describes some date codes (trim tag, carburetors, distributors, some transmission info, and differentials) is Supercars Unlimited's publication called "4-4-2 By The Numbers". It covers 4-4-2 from model years 1965 through 1972. You can view Supercar's online catalog at www.supercarsunlimited.com and you will find the booklet in there, along with a lot of other great Olds parts for your car!

The absolute best book I've seen regarding date codes is published by Duane Hekman (hope I spelled that right) from over at the V8Buick message board. He explains all the various date code systems and has excellent photographs as examples. Of course, the book is targetted toward Buicks, but much of it applies to Oldsmobiles and other GM products. You'll have to visit V8Buick.com to find Duane and see if he still sells the book.
Another useful resource are the judging manuals publlished by the NCRS. Again, they're targetted toward Chevy (and 'vettes in particular), but much of it applies to Oldsmobiles.
