Ok,
here is where I am at now. I have rebuilt, installed and plumbed a 455 that came out of a 71 98 and I have shoved it into my 71 Cutlass. I had to buy a new distributor for the 455 because the car I pulled it out of didnt have one in it and when I pulled the 403 that was in my Cutlass I actually dropped the distributor and ctracked it. Soooooo, I bought the new distributor and it was one that was ran with the points instead the HEI that I remember from the 403. I have no idea where the ignition coil is supposed to go. I was going to just put it on the fire wall but I cant find any holes where it should be screwed into. Can someone please give me some insight so that I can finally get my car on the road and drive it before winter hits us so hard up here in Washington state?

 

Most of the time it is screwed to the intake manifold with a strap.

 

Over the years I've taken a ton of digital photos of Oldsmobile cars and parts. I guess I've never focused on the coil location though, so these three photos are the best I can come up with.

The top is a 1973 Olds 98 455, look back by the distributor. The next one down is a 1972 Cutlass with an aftermarket intake, but you can see the same location with the distributor at almost a 90 degee angle from the intake. Then the last one isn't real clear, but on a 1967 Toronado its attached to the back of the passengerside head. If you don't have the metal bracket to hold the coil you'll need one. It may be the weekend before I could dig one out for you, but if you don't find one sooner let me know. John

Here is a picture I had from my 72's 350. Coil is on the intake.

I often wonder WHY they would mount it to a hot engine?? Heat is not a good thing for coils...

 

Mine is on the firewall out of the way and away from the motor. not sure where it is supposed to be on yours , possabl the motor but it does not mean you have to put it there. it's up to you , here is where I put mine. you can see the top of it just behind the air cleaner.
