If you sold the cutlass...
What would you replace it with?
I gotta be honest; when I picked up my 71 a couple years ago, a cutlass wasn’t my first choice. I spent a year looking for a rolling project and the cutlass kind of fell into my lap(not free by any means).
I have always wanted a 67-69 cougar which may take place of the cutlass if the opportunity comes around. An El Camino is up there too but for some reason my wife insists on real back seats for the kids and she thinks they are hideous.

If you sold the cutlass...
Then I would have only 3 vehicles and I could focus on the other two that need attention.
But the reality is that if I would reduce my fleet size, the other 3 vehicles would go and the Cutlass would stay. It was my daily driver decades ago and the plan is for it to return to daily driver status in my retirement.
I'm there with ya. One of my other vehicles is a Wrangler and I don't see getting rid of it, either.

I’ve always wanted a ‘77 Grand Prix SJ Fully optioned with T-tops, strato bucket pleather seats, gauges, electric everything - the works. Can still get solid cars for reasonable prices. I retire in 4.5 years, maybe then. won’t ever sell the Cutlass tho

While there is a plethora of cars I would love to have...if I had to pick one...it would be the 1966 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 with 421 (Trips) 4 -speed. 0-60 times of under 6 seconds which ain't bad for a 3,700 # car of the day.

I'm with K.W.
I don't own a Cutlass, I've always been kind of a Land Yacht kinda guy but if I had to sell something and could replace it something like that 2+2 would be in my cross hairs !!! thats comfort, performance, and sheer beauty all rolled in to one !! if not that at least its little brother 65-67 GTO in any configuration !! problem is along with the big performance and big style comes the big price tag !!! trust me I know, both of those cars were on my list 1970 was my cut off date, even the nice Le Mans or tempest
are bringing in the bucks, I almost pulled the trigger on a 66 Le Mans but then the 56 kinda fell in my lap !!
Any way make sure it's replacement is something that floats your boat and causes you no regrets !! P.S. your on to something with the Cougars and El Camino's though, the are reasonably priced compared to their counterparts. Good luck if you do it keep us posted.

If I sold my 54 I would try and replace it with a 40 Ford streetrod with all the creature comforts. The problem would be I probably would not get enough for the Olds to buy the 40 Ford. I have a 57 Chevy 2 door sedan that I have had for 52 years that I will start on this year. I have a wide two car garage to do it in and the Olds takes up one side. It is going to be cumbersome to do it. If I sold the Olds I would have plenty of room and would use some of the funds to finish the Chevy. With all the parts I have and the money I have set aside I probably need another $10,000-$15,000 to do it like I want it. The Chevy has sentimental value and will never be sold.

I would only sell my 66 Target Red Cutlass Convertible with a factory 4-speed to purchase another 66 Cutlass Convertible Lucerne Mist Blue, Light blue top and interior with a factory 4 speed.
Thanks

Mossy, if you sold the cutlass... is great subject matter. I've had 3 dream cars outside of Oldsmobile for a good 30 years now.
1973 Chevelle Coupe (absolutely love the Corvette style taillights on a colonnade)
1980s Jaguar XJS ( gorgeous unique looking vehicle)
1981 Z28 ( non gill like fender vents and cowl facing air induction hood, so cool in my book)
All 3 above though were superseded by the 1966 W30, have thought this car is the cats meow since 1989s Muscle Car Review.
Now with that said shockingly to me at least, after all these years the 73 Chevelle Coupe has been replaced with the 1976 Cutlass S Coupe. This change in direction has been slowly coming for the past few years. So now my outside of Olds list includes an Olds as well.
This here below just makes me really happy. Beautiful flowing body lines, every angle or straight on is just right, nose to tail. Even the 5 MPH bumpers flow with the car IMHO.

P.S. While I think the color combo is great in and out and I would be proud to own this exact example. The power-train is far from what I wish for. If and when I ever get one, 455/400/3.08 limited slip would be ideal.
In the end Oldsmobile wins for me on both ends.

68 442 stick in place of my automatic.
68-69 W30 stick, vert, triple black, or black/oxblood, or silver white/white.
68 SS427(Impala) 4 speed, vert, with T83 hidden headlights....black or silver with white top n gut.
68 427 L71/L89 Vette Roadster with offroad exhaust, black, silver or ontario.
68-69 Vette with a modern Vette chassis & drivetrain. Best of both worlds.
70 Rallye 350 stick.
70 GS Stage 1 Stick. Black or sliver.
2011 Challenger SRT392 stick blue/white or black/white
Had to have one or two modern muscles in the mix.

I don't want to be black balled for suggesting a non Olds but here goes, I know this is not everybody's cup of tea especially if your into mid 60's through mid 70's mid size cars BUT
if your in to land yachts, orphans, chrome, fins and tonnage this would be on my list , checks all the boxes mentioned !!
of course K.W.s pick on the 2+2 still stands

hey Mossy ,
If your going to go go big !! how about one of these? foreign but still GM guaranteed you will probably be the only one at the car show or cruise in that has one and if your fridge takes a crap and you need to haul one home from Home Cheapo you can do it in style !! it's awesome !!1956 Holden FJ-UTE .I think it needs a visor to complete the wow factor. I also thinks Toyota stole a name !! if ya find one let us know !!

Doubtful I'll get rid of the Mistress but should I and the money received would go towards these, I'd probably get a rat rod (olds powered of course) then I will always have to have another Miata. Then I think a Boxster might entertain me for awhile. The only part of this dream that doesn't fit is somewhere I will need a garage to put them all in, stuff dissolves up here in the weather..... Tedd

Tedd, as long as your cars keeps attracting pretty girls like the one above I don't think you will ever sell this car.
Solly, that is a cool ute even if the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

HMM, I just strted my search today for either a 65 Starfire or JetStar 1. Top choice would be a 65 Starfire convertible. Either car would be already restored or excellent driver quality with A/C. No more restorations for me, don't have any more room since we downsized this year. When all said and done Ill sell my 64 F-85 1 of none "post car"

That happens often, although its usually with a closer looking model like a Chevelle. I would love to tell you don't go there with a Mercury vs an Oldsmobile. But those Cougars are great cars. Had a 67 Auto with a 289 in the family, nice quality car. Mellow performer though, I was a kid back then and the go sensation ruled. My 67 base 330 Cutlass Coupe could destroy it if push came to shove....
.
.
I’ll keep everyone updated but I’m in no hurry to sell because I still have things I want to work on.
Sure, base model cougars are pretty underpowered with the 289 but luckily, they made more options.
They just do something for me; maybe being uncommon much like a cutlass in the world of classic/muscle cars.

I don't own a Cutlass but I won't sell my 64.5 (not stock) Mustang or my 66 Jetstar. I'd sell the s10 and the Focus before I sold either of the other two. I'd love to get a truck I could haul the cars with though. I'd also love to get one of my grandfather's cj5's since my brother isn't doing anything with them.
