If I buy heads, which ones?
I have seen discussion on small block heads . Which is the most desirable "code" to get?

If you are talking Olds, get the 5 heads. Supposed to be the best flowing. Be prepared to pay a good amount of money for them also.

Numbers 5, 6, 7, and 7a (NOT the 7A from the 307s) are all equivalent.

I had know idea they were all equivalent.

The number you are looking for is on the lower left hand corner if the head, I think it is right above one of the freeze plugs.
