It would look much better if it were not so flat.

It probably started out as a hard top.

Sadly you are probably correct. If so, the un-boxed hardtop frame would mean that the doors don't open and close very easily...

And unless the frame has been boxed it's probably not safe especially if there is any rust issues in the frame.....Tedd
