what makes an intake a performance intake? i have been looking at performance packages on my jegs magazine that come wiht the carb the intake the cams and lifters, seems like a good deal if i just wanted to get all the stuff new

The runner cross section area and shape are tailored to optimize performance in a specific RPM range. Low RPM performance and torque want longer, smaller cross section runners. High RPM performance wants shorter, straighter, larger runners. In addition there is the difference between single plane and dual plane intakes. The dual plane feeds four cylinders from each half of a 4bbl carb. This increases the signal through the venturi at low engine speeds to help with low RPM performance, but at the expense of high RPM power. The single plane allows each cylinder to see all four barrels. High RPM flow and power is better, but low RPM signal is weak.

so if i was to get a manifold from one of these guys that came off factory i mean would it be worth it if im puttin an after market carb on should i spend money on an after market manifold or would one of the cast iron factory be ok?

As to the question of which manifold to get, it depends on what else you plan to do to the car and how you plan to run it.

I have heard lots of bad things about Holleys for a street driven car, great things about a q-jet if tuned properly. Q-jets will handle good power and get better gas mileage.
By the way, I have an old cast iron 4 barrel intake if you want.
