I hate night driving...

I drove Lady to Cedar Creek lake this past Saturday so I could go boating and have dinner.
The drive down there was great. Temps in the low 80's, some clouds, top down and radio cranked up... The water cruising was even better - no wind = a fun time. Coming home was a bit more objectionable...

The bugs lurking about dark farm roads were in huge numbers, and were huge in size. Only 5 miles into the 75 mile home-bound drive, a grasshopper, secata killer, or some other "flying tank" ruptured on the windshield right in front of me with a sickening 'pop'... That had me peering around the 4" mess the rest of the way home. After another 15 miles, I was looking through a bunch more smaller splats. This is where ice scrapers would come in handy in TX; the wipers would have just smeared it all. Large numbers of giant white moth-looking-thingies were flying past past me at high speeds. It reminded me of the old "Star Wars" movies when they hit hyperspace...

To make matters grosser, Lady was doing the "frog stomp" along the way also. The 12" of rain we got over the past week made the little critters far too active and were hopping across the road just like in the "Frogger" video game. At 60 miles per hour, you had no reaction time, especially with the clouds of bugs distracting me.

Lady now has a bad case of the freckles, so she needs a wash very soon.
It is way too buggy out here in rural TX...

i ran into a situation like that at land between the lakes in Ky. the weather was just right and the lake was just right and all conditions were just right to have every bug in the area out in full force. it was so bad we had to slow down because we could not see out the windshield. i had to stop and use an ice scraper to clean the window. was the worst bug situation i ever seen. i hope to never do it again. just glad i was not in my oldsmobile

On the bike, you almost think it is raining when you hit the little bugs. The big ones might just knock you off!

And the rain cleans the windsheild for you.

I drive truck, and sometimes the over load of bugs gets bad enough where the sprayer doesn't do the trick, I spray windex directly on the windsheild with the wipers on. Cleans the muck up real nice.

Also doesn't hurt to to give the blades a quick wipe off to get the larger bug chunks off.

Sounds as bad as Florida during LOVEBUG mating season. Bad thing is if you don't clean them off they will eat the paint off your car.

I drove from Tampa to Vero beach at nite during love bug season when I was in college [yes it had to do with a hard body and adult beverages] What a mess.

Later I learned to spray Pam on my car during the love bug season. JUST DON'T LEAVE IT ON FOR LONG.

This is so true - my neighbors told me all about that experience and I saw the damage to his paint (they go to FL every year.)
When is the lovebug season? I want to drive to FL some time soon but want to avoid the bugs.

The last thing you want to do is use the WS washer with the top down.
Bug soup dripping on you is nasty.

God, I hate bugs on my car!! I try not to drive the Cutlass after dark. Those Iowa "corn fed" bugs just about carried my little Intrigue away. Had to go to the car wash twice!

In high school a friend had a '38 furd street rod he built and all the girls loved it of course. After a evening out cruising on a date he would make the lucky girl help hand pick all the bugs off the grill and wash the car before he took her home in his beater, he didn't keep girlfriends for very long.

At night the bugs are attracted to your headlights?, just drive with your lights off...easy.
It'll keep the suicidal deer from spotting your car and leaping in front of it too.

For an even more fun time????

Try a drive down the highway when there's a caterpillar infestation and the little buggers ALL decide to cross the road at the same time. Slippery as whale poop on an iceberg. Not to mention the nice green paint job you get all over the side and bottom of your car. Double EEYYUUUCCK!!

Think that is bad? Many years ago when I was still driving truck I had a run out to Missouri when they had the terrible flodding. Where I had to go was a powerplant they actually made a dyke around to prevent it getting flooded. After the water receeded enough to allow trucks to make deliveries I took in some important parts. Well I arrived from the east coast late at night. You could hear the front of the box truck getting peppered by bugs. it was so bad that the day after the front of the box truck above the cab was black. Also on the road approaching the plant you could not drive and miss a frog. They coated the road. The only thing I hate about driving at night is the old people driving slow with their high beams on.

Caterpillars? Nasty.... I heard Hawaii had a frog infestation that would have been similar. Double nasty...

On the topic of bugs, the second ride on my motorcycle years ago let me experience a June bug right between the eyes at 30 mph. From then on, the windshield stayed attached.

Yup. Gotta happy biker at work. Asked him the same thing and got a double whammy of an answer....

Like you said, "bugs on teeth". The second thing (kinda gross unless you're into this stuff).....happy bikers get a lot of free protein lunches. A road trip should only cost for gas, not food!!!

Ok, but to quote Alan Arkin: "Kevin, that's not funny".

Try Rain X Bug and Tar Protective Shield. I sprayed it on the car before I drove to the OCA Nats in Bowling Green from AZ and all of the bugs and slop slid off with the coating when I got there. I sprayed the front end and the sides behind all 4 wheels and the car came clean quickly. It works well!

Another nice thing about AZ is that we rarely have many bugs on the cars. I guess it is too hot here for the little slimy critters. We wash the car here mainly to get the accumulated dust off.

Hmmm..... Interesting.
Is this for just the windows or for anywhere? I think the rain x on the windshield would be a good start - forgot about that. At least maybe they will wipe off easier.

RainX is for glass only. The Bug and Tar Protective Shield is for paint and chrome. You spray it on and it is like an opaque white slime. I use Rain X all the time, but rarely need it in AZ. I first saw it in an auto parts store in Youngstown Ohio. A mechanic from an airline was buying 4-5 cases to use on the plane fleet at the Youngstown airport. That was in the early 70's. I only use the Bug Shield on trips. Sure makes road grime clean-up much easier!

Why would "the Lady" who goes topless need a bra?

Lady72nRob71 sorry been away a couple days, Lovebug season is in May and again in Sept. The further inland you go I've found is the worst. I once crossed the state and had to stop 1/2 way and clean my windshield. Wiper blades only smear them around.. But it's a small price to pay to live in paradise.

It is hard to shoot the 44's in a hardtop, also...

Rhetorical question - enough said... Both my ladies hate 'em.

Nasty bugs like that in paradise? It shouldn't be!
I will avoid driving through there during those months - thanks.

You should hear my neighbor lady talk - she's about as southern-fried as you could get. She cracks me up... I guess they are both almost considered "rednecks with money". They are great though - part of my family pretty much. In fact without her husband, I would not be drinking beer, shooting guns, going fishin, or watching the "redneck channel" on TV - life would have been boring then!
