How to tell if my 64 Cutlass vert is a 442?

I have a 64 Cutlass F-85 Convertible. This is my first Olds. I'm just wondering how to tell if its a 442? If I'm not mistaken 64 was the first year for a 442. My car has the 330 4barrel carb automatic on the column with single exhaust. It was owned by a older lady. I am the second owner. Can someone help me figure this out?
Thanks

All 64 442's were four speed cars. No automatics. All of them had dual exhaust. hence the first ones were called that because they had 4 speed, 4 barrel carb, and 2 exhaust.

Thats what I was thinking. Is there anyway it could of been a special order? Just wondering. Thanks for your help.

No. "Special Order" is usually the method people use to justify something that just isn't real. If you have to ask, it's not a 442. I'm guessing there aren't even 442 emblems on the fenders?

I would ask why would you even think it could be a 442. What clues do you have that it might be? The 442 had a dual snout air cleaner. It also had heavier duty suspension with a rear anti sway bar. It should have fender and trunk 442 badges. All were stick shift 4spd cars, even the 4drs.

Doesnt anyone do their own searching anymore? Google 64 442. It will tell you your car was not and has never been a 442.

I agree with your sentiment, but I think that many people consider posting a question at classicoldsmobile as doing research.

OK. Searching the web or this site will give an immediate answer. No waiting for a reply.

or he did the research and was looking to verify what he knew. He probably knew deep down it wasn't but hope springs eternal.

Not that this is any excuse but the search function on ClassicOlds is perhaps the worst I've ever seen. You can't search a basic word like 442, W30, 4V, or 5V because the search function doesn't recognize words with less than 4 characters.

I don't disagree with you at all. I rarely have a successful search "event" on here. I usually end up with lots of useless hits and nothing like what I'm looking for.

X3 on the search option... its pretty frustrating. But on a different note, it seems like every time I google (or bing search) something related to Oldsmobiles I find references to this site Maybe that's the key to finding old threads, go outside the site to search and look for references in ClassicOldsmobile!

Back to the OP, welcome to the site! 1964's are nice cars and a convertible would be fun no matter if its a base line F85 or a fully decked out 442. Please share some pictures with us when you have time.

Guys,

While I'm one of the first to suggest someone use Google and search for themselves, the O.P. has all of two posts. He likely doesn't even know what "4V" and "5V" mean. Be gentle.

By the way, if the search engine DID accept "442", how many threads do you think it would return? How many would be useful to the O.P.?

I fear we've already scared this guy off.

Joe,

The point is there are many three letter words or less than can be used in conjunction with other words to narrow a search down. Try to search something like 68 442 W30 and you get "no matches". I use google to search ClassicOlds as well but it's a PIA to leave this site just to do a search. Through Google you really can't search for posts by a specific username either.

I guess I get frustrated at this kind of post because I have a website and forum with a ton of info and still get questions asked like what's a 442. Bro has everything ever written about 65s but nobody bothers to look for it.

One cannot look for what one does not know exists.

Whenever I see threads that go in the direction this one has, I end up thinking they are unnecessarily harsh.

However I am also reminded of THIS site:

Remember we call them newbies for a reason All newbies should be given the benefit of the doubt until they learn their way around. We were all newbies once (except for maybe Joe)
