The VIN derivative on the block, trans, and frame is composed of nine of the thirteen characters of the VIN of the car. The first character of the VIN derivative matches the first character of the VIN and the last eight of the VIN derivative match the last eight of the VIN.

The first character of the VIN and VIN derivative is the division. 3 = Oldsmobile.

The fifth character of the VIN and the second character of the VIN derivative is the year. 0 = 1970

The sixth character of the VIN and third character of the VIN derivative is the assembly plant. M = Lansing

The last six of each is the sequential assembly number.

Every Olds V8 from 1968 to 1990 is stamped exactly the same. Olds did not stamp a VIN derivative prior to the 1968 model year.

Actually, if I remember correctly from what I read in the most recent JWO, Olds stamped what might be termed a VIN derivative on the engine back in the '20s. This really surprised me. Does anyone here have any more information about such "numbers-matching" stamps throughout Oldsmobile history?
