Holley carb question

Question about my Holley double pumper carburetor

the choke is always held closed by a rod the Po installed.
I might add a manual choke in the future as when it’s really cold I have to give it some gas for the first 2 min

I understand there is a fast idle adjustment screw
this might be a dumb question but if I turn that screw in with the choke flap always held open by the rod that screw adjustment won’t do anything right ?

On a holley carb the choke is always manual unless an electric choke has been installed. You can go one of 2 ways. Install electric choke or the old fashioned manual. You could also possibly eliminate the choke altogether if in a warmer climate.

Well right now the flap is held open with a fixed rod I have no control over it

Remove the rod and the flap unless you buy a manual choke cable setup

so the fast idle screw is useless unless that flap is working ?

Yes as long as all the other parts to it are removed.

With the flap open, the hi speed adjustment if turned in will override the curb idle speed adjustment. You don't want that. I've had my choke wired open forever and it starts even when the temp is below freezing. I just feather the gas pedal until it runs on it's own. You can buy a manual cable kit and make the choke work if you want.

yes that’s what I do now. Just feather the gas a bit until it stays idling on its own

what is your idle normal rpm when hot ?

There are some variables to consider for idle speeds once you drift away from a stock engine. Stock engines will idle at factory settings, modified engines with lopey cams tend to idle around 750.
