Hit a roadblock with carb re-assembly

This may seem simple, but I wanna get it right the first time. Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl. The float needle pull clip "hangs" off the float, correct? The spring clip keeps falling into the "slots" on the back of the float.

I think I got it. The pull clip hook from underneath the float.

My rebuild book says that the clip is not needed, so I left it out. Hopefully I won't have any problems.

I hook the clip on one side arm going from the float to the pad where the needle hits. the clip is a "fail safe" in case the needle sticks in the seat.

oops, the above doesn't work on all carbs. On a Qjet, hook the clip on the cross pad near where the needle hits it. On other carbs, work the float and see that the clip is positioned where it doesn't interfere but will pull the needle when the float gets near its farthest travel (nearest the bottom of the fuel bowl.) The clip also helps pull the needle off the seat when fuel pressure/level is very low.
