Heater Core

Getting further along with my complete restoration of my 72 442, A friend of mine who happens to be a 71 model Corvette owner came over while I was doing some work on my car this evening and suggested that since I had everything already torn down that it would be to my best interest to go a head and replace the heater core. I know for a fact that the core is not leaking(yet) and decided I would ask you guys what you think about me just going ahead and replacing it now, I called O reilly's auto and the core only cost 30.00.I thinking about just going a head and replacing it. Just might save me in the long run. Any suggestions?

If you have it apart this would be the time! I've put new carpet in a couple cars and each time I replaced the heater core first. Back when I was driving $100 Oldsmobiles as that's all I could afford, I had more than one heater core spring a leak! John

I have done frame off and I sandblasted the frame and sprayed it with Por 15. replaced both quarters, replaced the trunk floor and replaced the floor.Put all new body bushing on it as well. I have also replaced the exhaust system and replaced the manifolds. I had the transmission rebuilt. I bought a Thornton OAI hood also. The engine did not need any work but I cleaned it and painted it with POR 15 engine paint.Disc Brakes were added on the front only.I changed the interior from Saddle to Black.I have not put the interior back in.I am getting ready to put the fenders back on it had to do some work on the drivers side, I just went on and replaced the passengers side.This is my 3rd year working on it and I plan on painting late June.I have done all the work myself.

This is a no brainer. Replace the heater core AND the blower motor now. The last thing you want to do is remove your freshly painted hood and fender to replace these parts, only to scratch the fresh paint in the process.

I agree replace it now. I did not do this in my 57 when I installed the 455. Now it leaks and I have to replace it. I will need to add two joint to my right arm to get it done now.

Thanks everyone, I went over to the Auto Parts and ordered one. I never had even given the heater core any thoughts at all. I guess it was good my friend gave me the advise and you guys confirmed it. Now is the time to do this preventative maintenance on it.

Suggestion, a good radiator shop can use your top and bottom, and just replace the core, some of the aftermarket heater cores don't fit very well.
