Heater Box Color
I took my heater box out of my 66 442 today to change the leaky heater core. I want to paint the heater box before I reinstall it but don't know the correct color. I always thought it was black but now that I have it out it looks more grey.

I recently pulled my engine to freshen up my engine compartment on the H/O. Here is what I used and am very pleased with the results:
Frame and control arms- POR-15 Chassis Black
Firewall- Eastwood's 2k Underhood Black
Heater Box- POR-15 Gloss Black
Core Support- Sikkens Rally Black
Radiator Top Plate- Rustoleum Semi-Glass Black #7798830
Bottom of Hood- Rustoleum Satin Black #7777
My inner fenders are plastic so no paint there, just a good cleaning and buff.
The way my appraiser explained it to me, the increase in the sheen of black should start with the core support, slightly glossier for the top plate and ending in full gloss for the heater box. Not sure if this would differ on a '66. Good luck on whatever you decide!

Heater Box Color
Thanks for the comments and info. I bought the car in 1974 , my first summer out of high school. I started out just going to do the brakes and have been digging deeper and deeper. things are coming apart pretty well for the ones that haven't been apart for 54+ years. Hope to have it all back together and going in August.
I did a rattle can paint job on the engine years back in chevy blue because that was the color I had handy.
I want to clean up and paint the inner fenders and stuff in the engine bay plus a lot easier to work on. Going to pull engine and paint it the correct color and replace all the brake lines.
I'm replacing the carpet and seat covers so everything needs to come out.
My daughter and I recovered the rear seat a couple of weekends ago.
I bought this set up about 12 years ago and rebuilt the carbs. I will be installing it this summer.

My 66 98 box was a dark kind of hammertone gray originally but it’s satin black now and looks fine.
While it’s apart consider getting a new heater core for longevity. Also while carpets are out, that’s a good ti me to think about adding vacuum trunk release, trunk battery cables and wires for a stereo system if you’re interested.
I can also recommend dynamat or similar to quiet the floors and trunk. It helps. Big car experience only here, might not be helpful to your 442.
