Head Scatcher
Hello Guys,
I hopeing some could shed some light on these little headaches.
Newly rebuilt 72, 350 Olds Rocket, I have an exhaust manifold leak on the passenger side. Original manifold was used with new gasket.. Manifold was fine when motor was taken apart. Leaks are on ends of manifold, turned out lights and can see flashes. Can you double up on gaskets or should I fork out more cash for a new manifold?
second question,
I have an in line, plastic style, gas filter. Car is running but gas spits into filter . Should filter stay full or 1/2 full if fuel pump is working properly?
Any insight would be great
Thank You

I would not worry about what you see in the inline filter. Are the manifold bolts tight? Olds mobile did not use gaskets on the exhaust manifolds, they were metal to metal. Were the bolts replaced, perhaps they are too long? If not I would loosen the exhaust pipe to manifold joint and retorque. Then tighten the exhaust flanges again.

About the gas filter. I observed that in mine it turned out to be a fuel line leak on the vacuum side of the pump. There where no clamps on the line it work fine for around 7 years. Then I guess the lines got old and started leaking. At first all it was was what you see now. Then it got worse. And acted like it was running out of gas which it was . It took me a whole summer to figure it out .

No. It was pulling in air and that's what was spitting in the filter . I figured it out by almost replacing the whole fuel system and disassembling and cleaning it. Chased that one a whole summer. It kept acting like it running out of gas which it was.
