Though when I posted a for sale ad on another car site recently, It was deleted because of a spyware issue related to my hyperlinking to photos on imageshack (at least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it)

Laxatives are the human version of Draino...
So how did you get the attack? Bad web site? Email attachment?
I found that entering a mispelled site name can initiate all sorts of havoc. When that happens I make sure I click nothing - just CTRL ALT DEL and force the browser closed. Then clear cache and cookies and go on. If i remember the mispelled site i add that to the "restricted sites" list so that if I type it wrong again, no bad scripts can be done.
Typically i surf sites in unknown waters with java off, just in case I come across a bad site.
Yep keep antivirus updated, back stuff up and watch where you tread!

I've been in IT since 1999. Rules to follow.
#1. Firewall - You wouldn't believe how many people don't have one.
#2. Don't click on suspicious email links or website links.
#3. Don't open suspicious email attachments.
#4. Keep ONLY your OS and supporting software on the C: drive.
Everything else should be saved on another partition.
Why?? Because if you have to whack the C: drive you don't lose your stored data.
Follow those rules and 99.9% of the time you won't get a virus and data.
FYI too,
I haven't had a virus in well over 6-7 years I believe.
When my system gets bogged down, I do a whack and reload.
That's the corporate method. NO time for chasing do hickeys.
Fastest way to a fresh and not bogged down system is a Format C: Reinstall.
OR Acronis True Image fresh load backup reloads. < Best one IMO.
