Gauge v lite

O Great Ones, I seek knowledge....
why does a oil gauge require such a large sending unit compared to the one used for a dummy lite?
Am converting to rally pack and am curious.

The idiot light simply needs an on-off switch that closes when the oil pressure drops below 4-7 PSI. The gauge requires a variable resistor that changes continuously with pressure. That requires quite a bit more space.
