Gauge Cluster Solution

Good morning, I've had some issues with my gauges for a good while and I'm ready to find some solutions and I'm turning to the wisdom of the CO community as my own knowledge is lacking.

-My tachometer is way off- shows idle at 1,600 (i'm at 800) and during stop light driving it is pinned.

-My speedo has chewed up the plastic gear in the transmission. I've tried white lithum on the cable, back of speedo head etc. It flutters and is noisy.

First thought was to take a look at something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/191641247294...S:1123&vxp=mtr

Second idea was something like this-

http://www.gbodyparts.com/product_in...roducts_id=960

Draw back here is I have to send in my original stuff and it's twice the price. BUT! it's likely that all the bugs are gone and I'm digging the 155mph speedo.
I've down a lot of business with this company, they're great.

Third Option-
Fix what I have. Problem there is I don't know what is wrong, can't find anything really conclusive on the web and fixing it will require some hand holding via CO because i'm pretty ignorant in electrical matters. I was thinking it would be cool to start a nice lengthy thread with pictures and maybe a video to help future members as I have found info suggesting that G-body dash wiring is a habitual issue. Happy to do the project but I need guidance. I'm leaning this direction because I like DIY but I'm not going maverick on the H/O, I have the delta for experiments LOL.

Either way I'd appreciate some insight.

Thanks and have a great day.

Just off the top of my head. Is the tach a used item and was it on a 4 cyl previously?
I know some tachs have 2-3 wires that need to be disconnected or cut depending on the number of cylinders used, 4, 6 or 8. If used before on a 4 cyl it may be reading at twice the rpm.
Speedometer gears are readily available from many transmission parts suppliers. I'd be more concerned as to why it got eaten in the first place and fix that first.

Tach is the factory unit. My gut is telling me that the speedo head itself is causing too much resistance in the path of trans gear->bottom speedo cable->transducer- top speedo cable.

I think that because the speedo head "ticks" which is why I want to replace the speedo head . If the tach issue is poor sodering or fouled eletronics in the gauge cluster I MAW replace the entire thing.
