Fuel Tank Vent

Fuel Tank Vent
I recently took advantage of some cheap fuel prices and filled up my tank. It's the first time I've ever filled it. I usually only put in what I'm going to use while cruising keeping it somewhere around a quarter tank. Anyways, I went to take a little S.D. cruise today and pulled out of the garage on to a slight downward grade. Gas started pouring out onto the ground so I put it on the lift and found what I'm guessing is a vent on the top front of the tank. Is there supposed to be a vent valve on the end of the tube? I know the previous owner installed a replacement tank at some point so I'm not sure if it's even correct for a 70-442 Tube looks to be 1/2".

Rick, here's a thread with photos and a discussion about the vent hoses on a 1970. I can get photos of the tank nipples if that would help. John

One more thought... I put a vented gas cap on my 1970 442 years ago. Then with a full tank I came off the line at a traffic light and the guy behind me said gas sloshed out from behind the license plate. I put a non-vented cap on it and that fixed it. That might be another thing to check.

Rick, I had roughly the same issue! I like to keep a full tank for the most part. Mine would have issues when tank was filled and the cold spell and then warm, it would push gas out the vent and stink up the garage. After few times of this over a couple of years, I finally jacked the car up and found that the plastic had pretty much deteriorated, had one delivered by Fusick to homecoming and installed a few years back, with no issues since.
