With my engine rebuild and the big Block aluminum heads that hang over the front of the small block it was necessary to remove some meat from the heads for fuel pump clearance. That work was done by BMRE. He provided me with the fuel pump that fit those clearances. I bought a second, back up pump sometime ago. the original pump spewed gas out between the top and bottom halves of the pump. I installed the second pump, guess what it did the other day- It too spewed, I mean sprayed, gas all over from the same seal. I checked with BMRE and the company that makes those pumps is out of business. Bernard suggested I try a Holley 12-836 as a fitting replacement. But they are hard to find. I searched and came up with "out of stock" everywhere. That being said, anyone have a line on the Holley FP for Olds engines? Any input on why 2 pumps spew from the same spot? FYI, it is an intermittent spray, , always when just starting the car for the day. Then it stops and I can start and stop all day without a leak. Could there be back pressure from the pump to the carb that would force gas to spew from the seal? I tried on both pumps tightening the 2 halves together, none were loose and I just tried tweaking them a tiny bit so as to not warp or distort the rubber seal inside. Is there a sealant I could try on both the gasket and chrome pump surfaces? aside from going electric, any other suggestions??????

 

The Airtex 40736 is a decent pump, especially for 40 bucks. If your determined to stay with a mechanical pump the RobbMc 1100 is your other option, assuming enough was machined from the head for clearance.

 

The Holley mechanical pump for Olds motors has been out of production for years. They do not currently build a mechanical pump for an Olds motor. The 12-836 pump is rebuildable, but I'm not aware of anyone selling the parts. I strongly suspect that the diaphragm and other internal parts are the same on all the Holley pumps in that family, so if anyone sells the parts for the Chevy version they should fit. The problem is that Holley has superseded that entire line and no longer offers parts for it.

 

The problem is that the Airtex pumps have the fuel line fittings on the top, like OEM. This won't clear the overhanging aluminum head. The out-of-production Holley pump has the fuel ports around the perimeter.

 

I'm not sure if it'll work with your small block/aluminum head combination but I've been running one of these TSP pumps on my 400/aluminum head engine for a few years. Inlet/outlet ports are on the side and you can rotate the head to improve fitment. It puts out a pretty steady 7psi and I haven't had any problems with it. Pretty good for the money. No need for head clearance mods on my application but if you've already modified yours, chances are this'll fit.

swapped in the TSP pump, fit perfect, appears to be the exact same housing as the Holley and one provided by BMRE. Oh yeah, no leaks.......
