Fuel Filter

Has anyone sen a inlet gas filter that has a check valve in the front? My so has a 68, he change the filter awhile back, drove it in the garage. Went to start it couple weeks later, would not start. Carb was bone dry. Took the filter out and saw it had this spring check valve. He called me, and I said I never saw a filter like that. He took the valve off, and can ran fine. Anyone ever see one like that? I was wondering if it was for a electric fuel pump, but I can't think of what year Olds had a elec pump.

It is a check valve. It is supposed to hold fuel in the bowl so you don't have to crank and crank to get fuel to the carb after sitting for a few days.

They're quite common. There are two variations of the exact same filter - one w/ a check valve & one w/o the check valve.

BTW, if you have a filter w/ a check valve, you can simply remove the check valve. Also, because it's a check valve, it needs to be inserted in the correct orientation.

I use the ones with the check valve however make sure you check them for stickiness. I use a ball point pen. Sometimes the valve will stick when new.
That may have what happened with your son. Always try and blow through them 1st and that will let you know.
