Flowmasteror Dynamax

One of my Walker Super Turbo's is starting to go after 17 years. So now I'll be looking for some new mufflers. I've heard good things about Flowmasters and Dynomax.

I want a low throaty sound when she idles and a nice low growl while cruising. I hate the machine gun sound you hear on some when they are accelerating, so I don't want that. I have a 10.25:1 compression 455, I don't need to exaggerate power.

Here are some spec's. True dual exhaust 2.25" from the X & Z manifolds to the mufflers then 2.25" to the end. No cats, no cross pipe.

In your experience, what sounds closest to what I'm looking for, and what is the number (40 / 50 etc) of the muffler. Any suggestions are welcome. Oh, the pipes are still in great shape, so I won't be changing them, only mufflers. Thanks.

Dynomax IS Walker... why not just buy a new pair of dynomax/walker super turbos? seems like they have served you well for this long...

I'm not a big fan of the noisemasters.

When my 455 comes together i'll be building a new exhaust from scratch to replace the stock stuff i have now.

I'll likely buy borlas, or some other type of straight through design muffler like the dynomax ultraflow. I like how those style mufflers are pretty quiet during idle & cruise, but get super loud at WOT.

a big key to your sound level at idle, cruise & WOT is... the shorter the muffler case, the louder the sound. Longer the case, the quieter & deeper the sound.

So if you like that deep throaty sound, get mufflers with the 20" long case (not to be mistaken for total length including inlet & outlet pipes).

I like the sound of the dynomax over the flowmaster. It just seems to have that "musclecar" rumble.

I have 40 series Flowmasters with 2.5 duals on my 350.

I consider them to be loud. I'll be trying the Walker/Dynomax later down the road.

The beauty of the (no)Flowmaster is that they are obnoxiously loud (and drone) while STILL being more restrictive than the Dynomax Turbos in every published test...

Sorry, but I rank Flowmasters as the musclecar version of fart-can Honda mufflers.

at the shop we put a set of flowmasters on the bosses car (he bought them). we are now in the process of putting a set of Walkers on it. the flow masters are so obnoxious at around 2000 rpm that you want to park it and run so no one knows you were driving it. all my cars have had Walkers and they have never let me down.

Good thing you're not talking about Karen!

Walker still has the super turbos available. Kit is around 189 + shipping. You can probably get the muffler alone for a lot less.

love the super turbos had them on my 95 impala ss sounded good but i love noise so i run hooker aerochambers on my 72 cutlass atleast its got the power to back up the noise lol but i agree sometimes the noise gets very annoying . those super turbos are hard to beat they sound good and flow better than alot of other mufflers out there at a fraction of the price

Dynomax Super Turbos, had them on my '66 in the 90's, loved them, they were also inexpensive.

Hmm I ordered the 14" in length Super Turbos for my 350. Will they not sound deep?

They will likely be just fine. They won't be obnoxious.
The 19" long case ones would just be a little bit quieter. Maybe even too quiet if you have a mild/stock small block. 14" will be great.

Impressive! However not as impressive as your dog that can drive your car. Why didn't you yell and let him know you were hangin' on the back bumper with a video cam?

Seriously, that sounds pretty good and is not objectionable. What type are they?

My problem is that two cars at our car show this year had some great sounds. One had Flowmaster, the other Dynomax. So I'm trying to check them both out. Have no complaints with my "Walker Super Turbo's" (other than not being able to say that fast 5 times).

As for ordering Alan, I'll just by them locally...no shipping involved, and I only need the mufflers.

I bet most of you were trying to say Walker Super Turbo's fast at least 5 times. Thanks for all the responses.

Yeah... I know, but I have flowmasters too with a crossover and full lengthpipes with turndowns under my bumper that only hang below the bumper an inch or so. When driving it, it's not loud in the car at all but I can hear the exhaust. I dont have a radio so those are my tunes. I love how it sounds.. my buddy has spin techs and we both like how mine sound better than his. Mine have a crisp snarl.

Flowmaster 40 Series with 2.5 and h pipe sound really nice on my 455. Motor build stock to 70 specs. I think with no h pipe and 2.25 pipes it will be a little quieter and sound perfect for your car. Flowmaster's really have a nice sound with no raspy sound and no pinging when you let off the gas such as straight through mufflers like some dynomax and cherry bombs. Good luck.

My 68 442 I bought a few moths back had flow master 40's. It sounded great but was really way too loud for me & the neighbors. I had a cross pipe added and went with 50's. It just does not sound right for me. I can't explain, the tone changed, more brassy, it is quieter but I just do not like it. I would like a much quieter sound with nice base. I wonder what a stock set sounds like? What i would go with to make like from the factory?

A cheap set of thrush turbos are very economical at about 20-25 each and sound a little louder than stock. Very nice mellow muscle car sound. Much quieter in the 2" form, yo can use reducers or if you have a 2" exhaust will sound very much like a stock exhaust. You can also use 2.25 with a set of resonators on the head pipes going to the thrush mufflers and will be the closest thing to a stock 1968 442 as it rolled of the assembly line.

Ken,
Check out Flo Pro Max. http://www.flopro.com/max.html. Red Deer company and very similar to Magnaflow. I also have a used set of Dynomax Turbos if you're interested.

I have a small block 330 UHC 4bbl but run dual Flowmaster 40s with 2.25" pipe (no H pipe). Nothing else compared to them when I was doing research (and I did months and months of research online as I didn't want to buy something I would hate). I wanted something that made the car less Granny-mobile and more V8 sounding without the drone or not being able to stand it on the highway or talk inside the car. My car revs at 3000 RPM @ 65ish MPH and it's not loud at all windows up or down. It has a nice throaty sound on takeoff and a nice sound at idle which was just what I wanted.

There is also the Delta Flow series from Flowmaster if you want it quieter. My friend has Delta Flow 50s on his 69 400 442 and they are pretty throaty at idle and take off which is what he wanted (I think his is 2 1/2" pipe) with no H pipe.

Everyone has their favs so do your research like I did using the various company's websites and YouTube videos. One guy at our cruise night had Magnaflow on his Cutlass and we all agreed the low compression small block didn't do them any justice and the sound was flat.

Dynomax on the left and Flowmaster on the right with an X pipe. There, I fixed it.

LOL. I love the fix! That was good. I have a kit from Summit, so whatever they use I used. It's the kit that runs from the header to the bumper. The camera is a GoPro unit. You can find it on Ebay. About 275 ish. If you take one to a lake make sure you tie something to it that will make it float. I lost mine last weekend because it got knocked off the wake board by the tow rope. No small feat. When you suction cup this thing onto something a grown man cannot remove it. It's in Davy Jones' locker right now. I already replaced it I like it that much.

Flowmasters on mine at the Moment. It's bored and stroked and everyone who hears the car thinks it has a big block-

I went from Magnaflow (headers and 455, edelbrock heads with the lunati 60803) with the x. (too ricey) To true duals and aerochambers with cherry bomb resonators. Not bad. Next I went with dynomax long case super turbo's. A nice change, however, they only lasted about 3 weeks as they were to quiet at idle and cruise for me. Lost my interest as it took the fun out of it. Now I am still running true duals with 3" head pipes and aerochambers 2.5 in and out, no resonators. Sounds nice as long as you don't hammer her!! Then all hell breaks loose. Anyways, it's still a work in progress. JMO

I've got headers and Dynomax super turbos on mine, I love them. They are relatively quiet at idle but rumble when you get on it. My 6 and 9 year olds love to rev it up!

Look into spintechs, not supposed to be as loud as flowmasters at idle but crazy loud at full throttle.

You might like the sound of Magnaflow mufflers , they have a low muscle car sound to them.

FLowmaster 50 series dont have that resonating inside like the 40s and have the sound that all muscle cars should have with out the too loud volume that gets you noticed by the law.

I totally agree! i have magna flows on my stang and it has a nice idle sound. and roars like a muscle car when you get on it. The flowmasters have more of a nascar sound and pitch to them.

I guarantee you will be totally happy with the MF mufflers.

Well I brought the car in to Midas. They said that I should try Magnaflows. I asked, "What if I don't like them"? The guy said he'd guarantee that I'd like them. "And if I don't." "Then we'll change them to something you do like." Wow, how could I go wrong?

So, I had new rear coils put on (one was sagging and I had a guarantee for life from 1984). I went in the hear the Magnaflows. Not too loud but a great low muscle car sound. Nice hum at crusing speed. I'm pretty happy with them. So, I'm keeping them. Thanks for all the suggestions and opinions. They did help.

FlowMasters with a X pipe = True Muscle car sound,A Olds sounds nothing like ANY other car with any mufflers.........If FlowMaster are to loud you got the wrong muffler......As for performance gains.....i dont think most of your stocks cars will miss HP over another more straight thru design........kinda like the aircleaner debate.....My car in the vids below........

At the track and yes you can barely hear the dam thing..........
