Finally bought a Cutlass! 71 S coupe

Some of you may have seen my post in the newbie forum. I have been looking for a cutlass that is in good shape for a few years. Well I finally found one and brought her home last night. Its a 71 Cutlass S coupe. From all the cars I have seen it seems like it had the least amount of options.

It has a Rocket 350 motor apparently rebuilt. (have not confirmed if numbers match)
Drum brakes all around
Green interior w/ bench in front
Column shift
No a/c
No 3rd gauge in dash.
Center vents in the dash are plugged/dummy pieces and not actually heater vents (can they be made functional?)
Car does have dual exhausts
Newer gas tank

The car was restored at some point 5-6 years ago (previous owner claims it was a frame off type of job) and still shows really well.

My plans for the car:

Dye the interior black
convert front to disc brakes (anyone know whats a cost effective method)
Install tach in dash to look semi-stock
New Springs/shocks (to increase the height a bit from the rear.. it looks like the car is sagging)
442 grills
442 hood
ratchet floor shifter (promatic 2 perhaps so it can fit with the bench seat... may consider installing bucket seats)
Taller skinnier tires to give it a more stock look.

By the way, the scooby doo mats were included!

Your car looks nice and clean. I like the color is it willow gold? Are the outside mirrors an olds part? I have seen that style very ocaisionally in pics but not often.

the blocked center vent is std w non AC cars. I would guess w parts from an AC. car you could make it work w heat but you would need the vent, ducting, the dash control, and probably other parts to make it functional.

there is a sticky in one forum section on converting to front discs using OEM style parts (VS an aftermarket kit) the beauty of that is using common GM parts ensures availability for years to come.

the clock blank can be removed and an aftermarket tach like the SUN super tach can be fixed in its place to look similar to original or there are aftermarket versions that look original ( although these are frequently faulted as inaccurate)

the SEM vinyl dye works great, just follow prep instructions.

welcome to CO

Nice ride, the S grilles are very rare, I’d keep ‘em..

Nice car, a great find! I like the original bench seat- looks like the majority of cars that were built back then.

Congratulations on your new ride. Looks nice. It's just personal but I wouldn't change out the grill. 442 grill doesn't help with the unique look of the car but thats just me. To many non 442's running around looking like one. Can you post a picture of the Data plate on the firewall. That would add to your information.
Nice car.
