Fan hitting bottom of new shroud.

Hi everyone, I replaced the fan shroud on my 70 cut. 350 today and you can't even turn the fan by hand, it keeps hitting the bottom of the new from GM shroud PN#402995. I had noticed one of the previous owners had cut out the bottom of the OEM shroud #402995, now i know why. Has anybody seen this happen to there cars? I have a 19 inch fan and believe it is OEM. Motor mounts are still connected together, can they crush this far down?? Thanks

Is the bottom of the shroud bolted and tightened to the tabs on the core support?

The reason I ask...not long ago I upgraded to a 4 row radiator. When I was test fitting everything I didn't have the bottom of the shroud bolted tight, just sitting loose, the fan hit the shroud while turning by hand. When I tightened the bolts,it all pulled together and did not hit anymore.

Just a thought I had.

You can shim the shroud down from the top so the fan is more centered, thereby eliminating the need to cut any part of it. This is covered in the Assembly manual on SEction 11, page 110 (shroud 402995)

If all of the above fails, replace the passenger side motor mount.

Yes, the shroud is fully bolted in and it is a 3 core. Thank you for all the input. i will try these repairs and adjustments and get back to this forum. Thanks again.

I'm not positive, but a 19" fan does not sound like a stock size........ I always thought 18" was factory...........

I had the exact same problem with the new Gm fan shroud. Measure the new fan shroud opening and then compare it with the original one. I found the nos one to be 1/2 an inch smaller. I could not use it on my w31. I restored and and reused the original.

My 19 inch fan has 6 blades and i cannot find a part number on it. How many blades is normal for this car? It looks like a factory GM fan but from what, i don't know. OPGI has "matching" OEM fan that is 17.5 inch and has 7 blades. I did not have the car for the first 41 years so it's past is starting to reveal itself to me. I will try not to let this car fool me agian.

A 6 blade clutch fan is correct for your car. I've come across 19" and 19.5" 6 blade fans, but I don't know the applications for each. This topic has come up in the past and in two instances when the person changed out the motor mounts their problem was fixed. I'd encourage you to look at your motor mounts first, they're very inexpensive when purchased from RockAuto.

And replace both, not just one side!
They seem to turn to 'jello' with a few applications of oil from leaking valve covers!

Yep, my motor mounts were so wasted that the oil pan started to hit on the cross-member they sort of smashed down -though the fan never hit the shroud...

I installed both mounts today. The fan is now clearing the shroud but is still very close. At least now I can make some modifications to the shroud where I could not before. Thanks for all the input.
