Offset is the important metric, but wheel vendors use backspacing because it is easy to measure, if much less useful. The 1960s and 70s GM RWD cars all used wheels with about zero offset. Backspacing for zero offset is half the rim width plus the small additional amount of the inside wheel lip. On a 6" steel wheel, that will be 3" (6/2) plus about 0.25" for the lip, or 3.25" total backspace. On a 7" wide wheel, that's 3.5" plus 0.25" or about 3.75" total. Wheel diameter is irrelevant.
