Engine number

Is it possible to cross reference a vin number by using the engine number as my vin plate was removed and never replaced when the car was resprayed.

Well, sort of. If it's the car in your avatar photo, nope. For 1968 and later Oldsmobiles, the engine has a VIN derivative that is made up of the first and last eight characters of the VIN. The missing four characters (positions 2 through 5 in the VIN) are the model and body style identifiers that you can find on the cowl plate. Of course this assumes the car has the original engine.
