Engine hone recommendations

Any suggestions on which type of engine hone I should use ? Ball style or the three finger type ? What grit ? I’m going to use it on a stock 350 olds that has just a little flash rust on a couple cylinders and needs a deglazing on the rest . If I used the ball hone would the 4.25 inch be sufficient ? This is my first try at this any pointers would be helpful . Thanks

Dingle ball the cylinders lightly! Ball hone it.

You can get many different grit hones that fit your 350. Here are some hones Summit has for 4.000 in. to 4.250 in. bore diameter.

The grit needed will vary with the type and manufacturer of the rings. What rings are going to be used? Others that know will make a recommendation based on the type of rings.

Good luck!!!

I’m just using cast rings on the original pistons on this motor.

Mitigate all residual traces of the grit from the hone when you're done or it will scuff the rings in very short order.
Dawn/water solution with a plastic scotch brite sponge (the blue non scratching type) Wash rinse and repeat. Quickly dry & hose it with WD40. Can scrub it down with diesel first then dawn then WD.

If we're offering advice I always toss in the Engineer-in-me been-there-done-that mistake questions so I may sleep...have you measured the bores for concentricity, tapper and do you have a ring ridges?

I’ve not yet measured the bores I will though with my highly accurate China freight measuring tools .there is a slight ridge at the top of the bores but still hard to tell if it’s carbon build up or wear . The pistons slid out with little to no effort . I really just want to see if I can get this thing running I have no plans for it after that.

Flex Hone, 4 1/8 or 4 1/4, depending on what model/series flex hone you choose(GB or GBD). 240 grit for your oem style cast ring. They actually recommend 180-320 for a rering. With most i see recommending the 240 grit. I have done this with very good results.

I picked up the 4 1/8 240 grit flex hone and ill say it did a nice job on the cylinders, there was virtually no lip at the top of the bores.I have one cylinder that has a bit of roughness to it, i think the threeway stone hone would be better suited for that at least initially.

You mentioned you would measure the cylinder bores. Do you have a dial bore gauge, or telescoping gauges and micrometer set?

we’ll tried to measure with some cheap stuff I got at harbor freight but my measurements were all over the place . It was one of those spring loaded t shaped affairs . You could put it in the same place 10 times and get a different measurement each time . I guess I have to spring for a nice dial bore guage if I’m gonna continue monkeying with this stuff .
