drain the oil

Quick question...

When I put my Olds into storage for the winter, should I drain the oil? Some people have told me not to do it because "you want the oil in the engine". But, wouldn't all of the oil be drained down into the oil pan anyway?

Yes, it would drain back into the pan, but my choice would be to leave it in anyway. Just its presence may help discourage corrosion.

I would leave it and change it in the spring.

I would leave it in there in case of an emergency in which the car needs to be moved abruptly.

Never leave something that can be started in a condition where it would wreck itself if it were.

Why would you drain the oil and leave the pan empty?

Drain it and put in fresh: Sure, not always essential, but it makes sense.

Drain it and leave it empty: Why???

Koda is right. Never ever leave a startable car without oil. EVER!!!!

I always change oil in the fall and in the spring. I don't put enough miles on to pay attention to miles between change intervals.

The only reason I would wait to change it is if it is stored where it will go through temp changes it will condensate inside the engine. Maybe not a problem, but I would not leave it empty.

X2 on that. I just put mine away and plug in a battery tender. Have done that for three winters.

Aside from a quick reconnect of the battery I always store my car in otherwise operable condition and drivable condition, though for the 2 and a half to 4 months storage I usually never run it.
