Do Fuel Additives Work?

Ok. My chevy truck was running below standards ( a bit sluggish but still steady driver) Recently I won a bottle of carb/injector cleaner at a car show. I put the whole bottle in a tank with @ 12 gallons of gas. Today three days after I poured the cleaner in the tank I noticed while passing a slower car the truck performed fine. I thought to myself wow the engine did fine.....then a short time later I remembered adding the fuel additive.
I have used fuel additives in the past but more as a wimm then for a performance issues. But the fact is the truck engine is running better now since the additive then it has run the past 6 months. The performance change is clear.
In the past I have read many posts saying additives are not worth the costs....sooooooo what do we think about it!

Navy Vet, I moved your posts to a new thread.

FWIW, the only time I've added fuel additives to my gasoline was when I added lead additive to my 64 Olds 98. That was before I put hardened valve seats in the heads.

What type of truck do you own? If it is a late model truck with high miles you should desludge the throttle body (and possibly the fuel injectors) and change the fuel filter as regular maintenance. This is what fuel additives attempt to do; however, adding a bottle of snake oil to your gasoline won't compare to maintaining your vehicle.

FWIW...Mag articles I have seenh have said the only fuel additive they found that worked was Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner. I run it every so often in my 07 Charger and it does seem to clean the injectors, which is pretty much what the mag article said. Lead additives and octane boosters? My experience is pretty much snake oil.

Thanks OLDS 64!!
In my 64 olds I only add lead substitute and in the spring I do add marvel mystery oil and thats it. I do keep up on the simple things...oil and lube/ gas,oil and air filters. The truck
( if that is what you call) it is a 1998 S10 chevy. It has only 103K miles on it and it was well maintained. I changed the 2 o2 sensors last month and did a minor tune. But as I said
the change was significant after I put in the additive. And yes it was techron!. Maybe it was as simple as a semi clogged injector and the additive did the trick. Still happy about the outcome

I have used some to clean out catalytic converters and it seems to me it's a 50/50 shot I did how ever use some on my truck a year ago and 5000 miles still no p0420 code or efficient o2 codes

I run Lucas fuel treatment and Seafoam to clean my fuel system. Lucas will clean and quiet my wife's 06 Mustang's injectors nicely. I use it maybe every 6 months.

I desludged the throttle body and injectors on both my 93 Buick LeSabre and my wife's 03 VW Bettle. It was a good use of an afternoon and about $20 in gaskets. It improves idle quality and throttle response on modern vehicles (like rebuilding the carb on your Olds).

+1. It really has lead, and it really adds octane.

I know there's lead in it because once, before i got my timing dialed in, I got caught with a low tank at a place that had no 93, and had to use 91. I added "extra" octane "just to be sure." When I checked my plugs after that tank, they had lead deposits on them, "just like in the old days."

I'll add BG 44K to the list, Octane Supreme & Techron are the only others that I have used & seen used repeatedly w/ noticeable results. I got turned on to 44K & Techron back in the BMW engine campaign for intake deposits back in the mid/late 80's, saw good results across hundreds of cars & have used them personally. I used Octane Supreme back when I had an octane needy engine & it worked better than toluene or other supposed octane boosters. Prior to that I always ran water injection on high compression engines when I didnt have 100LL gas on hand.

Is there a way to get octane supreme below the 23 bucks a can price?

I get mine from Wild Bill's for $22.50 a can, plus shipping (about $25 including shipping).

If people in the same area wanted to do a group buy, he gives free shipping on 6 cases (36 cans), but if everyone wasn't nearby, the added cost of getting it would eliminate the savings.
