Distributor tuning

I know Ive asked questions about this before but please refresh my memory!!

Last season I replaced my distributor with a NAPA HEI one and it came with the silver springs and I had to back off the timing a bit to get rid of engine ping!!

I got bored today and had a HEI kit with 3 sets of springs...black ..silver and gold.....Gold looking to be the stronger springs

So with the silver springs my timing curve was coming in too quickly causing engine ping......is this a correct statement??

So if I replace the silver springs with the gold springs it will retard the timing curve???

You may only need 1 gold spring to raise it a bit.

Agreed. I ended up using one light and one medium spring in mine.

Maybe. You need to balance initial timing, vacuum advance, and mechanical advance to get the optimum timing.

What is the most expedient way to do that? Dyno?
