This site shows 1976 Olds 455 engine.

And the Olds wiki says 1975 455 engine as well:

After a good cleaning it should go right in a 72 455 I would imagine.

Sure thing. My 350 is sporting an HEI distributor from a 1977-1979 403 engine.

Since the distributor is interchangeable between all second generation Olds engines, all you need to do is tailor the initial advance, the mechanical advance, and the vacuum advance for your specific application.

The HEI distributor was first used in 1975. Your 72 would have come with a breaker point distributor.
