Distracted driving (sort of)

I drove my 62 wagon to work today, since it's a nice day and there's a Friday night cruise near where I work. I'm on the freeway, doing 65-70 in the left lane and I see a BMW M3 close behind me. The driver has his cell phone perched on top of the steering wheel, texting. I get upset at this, since I'm always nervous about idiot drivers hitting me in traffic when I drive the car to work. The BMW pulls out to the right and that's when I realize the driver wasn't texting, he was taking a picture of my car.

While that's still not a smart thing to do, I guess I can give him a pass this time.

I took my '81 wagon to drive the boys to school this morning ... before I pulled away, there were boys staring out through the fence at it. A thin ray of hope for the next generation.

I was picking up my son from marching band practice (he plays the trumpet). Several dads came over with really nice compliments on the '72, but a couple High School guys gave me a "whoa, nice ride!" comment. Felt good to an old f@rt.

Last month I actually seen a guy shaving, not the electric one, shaving cream on his face and I don't know what razor he was using, with the sun visor down because of the vanity mirror on the NJ turnpike doing 65 mph.

Geez, watch out for those potholes or stop and go traffic. That could be one real messy shave.

When I take the k5 to work or the 72 I take the backroads it adds another 30 min. To my commute on the way there and about 45 min. On the way back but I don't gotta worry about idiots on the highway., plus a little extra time in the cruisers ain't a bad thing . My alternate route is very scenic.

I like that cartoon.

When I pick up my kid at school in the pink convertible, he ducks down and hides so nobody can see him.

One day I said, "Why don't you like riding in this car? Look: Everybody is smiling and waving at us."

He glanced at the people in the sidewalk showing how much they like the car, ducked back down, and said, "They're all old."

Driving the Silver Bullet back from one of the OCA Nationals, somewhere in Missouri, as I recall, on an interstate. Car swooped by us in the fast lane, hit their brakes, and slowed down drastically as I (had to) pass them on the right, as they stayed in the fast lane. Slowly I watched them approach again, in my rear view mirror. As they passed (much slower) everybody, including the driver, had their cell phones out, taking pictures of the car, and giving us "thumbs up" gestures before they boogied on down the road.

A friend of mine had a '59 Cadillac, when he took it out sometimes other cars would get way to close to get pictures, the worst ones would overtake then pull in front and brake so they could get pictures of the front as well, he had a number of close calls, Caddy brakes aren't as good as modern cars.
A few times he was stopped by the police so the officers could take a look at the car.
Part of owning a car like that is for people to look at, and makes going out for a cruise a fun experience, mostly he would get a friendly toot and a big thumbs up .

Well Joe, when driving one of my Oldsmobiles I stay in the slower lane at the speed limit, only using the left lane to pass or move over for emerging traffic. Yes, I'm very aware of other vehicles, same as driving my motorcycle. I have a saying, "drive your drive." Meaning don't change your speed because someone is on your *** plus don't tap the break pedal either. Basically drive the same drive no matter what they are doing. I only posted this because to me it seemed like you may have been a little distracted when you thought it was a cell phone. Jmo, KEN

That's what I do no matter what I'm driving.
Well, except for the speed limit part .

I'm spoiled by the cruise control in my "modern" cars. I set a few mph over the limit then I don't worry about a ticket. In Ohio their tuff on speeding and so many State Patrolman. Driving an Oldsmobile the speedometer just one more thing to watch. My grey 98 has cruise control but not working presently. Ken

I cause an accident today. I was at a light and was goosing it as I crept up to make my right at the light. So the car was definitely getting attention. I just looked at the right time and caught the girl looking at my car in her lexus then I realized she was making an unprotected left while the light was a stale yellow., well guy in the oncoming lane must have thought she wasn't gonna go. She got t bone pretty bad. I felt pretty bad but it happens I guess. All this happened right as I started to make my right turn. Had I turned I think I might have been in a tight spot but I got the hp to get up and go.

With great power (of others' attention) comes great responsibility.

For the same reason I only show my car off as a sleek, slow rumble machine. Unless people ask.

You aren't responsible for other road users not paying attention to their driving. If they get distracted because they are looking at your ride that's their problem. Just like a guy looking at a pretty girl, or someone checking out something that caught their interest.
Did you speak to those involved and say "Hey, it's my fault, sorry I have such a good looking car".

Roger.

I have found the very same thing happens a lot, but here mine is the only 59 98 currently registered so not many people have seen one and its a real novelty!!
Its far bigger than anything ever made here and the attention actually makes driving hard as the traffic no longer acts predictably and cars 'circle' you trying to get a good look. Some days I feel like a fish in a fish bowl lol.
Now petrol stations there's another story, but I would not have it any other way.
All the attention shows these cars have a rightful place in automotive history and sharing them with the world is the best way to enjoy them.
