Delta88, 1966, TH400 strange leaking
Hi all,
maybe someone has an idea:
My TH400 (car is 425 Delta 88, 1966) doesn't leak at all. One forgivable drop on the pan, when it is really hot.
But every time the car sat for a few weeks, it leaked quite a lot from the extension shaft seal. I replaced it, but it happened again. Dry in use, leaking when parked.
I learned that my rubber mount was worn and probably 0.5" flat. I happily replaced that, sure that the seal was working well under centrifugal load but not when parking in the wrong driveline angle, sitting on a to low mount.
After that, the car was dry for a while before suddenly loosing 2-3 pints on the garage floor while standing for a few weeks.
Yesterday I cleaned and refilled, drove and inspected her directly after a 30min ride and today - dry.
Maybe I oversee a clear problem, I am no expert with automatic transmissions...
Any hint is appreciated! Thanks in advance!
André

The level of the trans fluid in the pan will drop on start up as it is pumped into the converter and transmission. When the engine is turned off the pan fills with fluid. It's not uncommon for it to rise above the pan gasket point or higher. Anything that height or lower can leak due to age, bad seal, etc.
Replace the leaking seals and carry on.
