decided to pull the engine

the weather has been nice and i was also inspired by macadoo so i have started stripping the engine i havent pulled an engine in a while except for my boat some years back (i used a john deere back-hoe at work to pull it, load it into my truck and work on it at home)

i cut and welded this engine stand back in the day but the wheels are crappy and lost their ball bearings and plus a few tack welds on the wheel frame, so i decided to buy a harbor freight 1 ton stand yesterday...front wheels dont swivel and the hardware had no lock washers but i guess it will be fine

OK, I'm in CT as well.
My observations are;
1. We are 2 weeks from November in the Northeast.
2. The nose of your beauty is at the garage door, means your a$$ will be in the breeze, when puttin' her back in.
3. I hope you're faster than I am.

All kidding aside, Best of luck with the project.
I'm having a 455 built with much help by Steve Minore.
We have a sheltered place picked out to do the 350 to 455 transplant, hopefully before thanksgiving. Can't wait to melt my old skinny radials.

Some of my favorite times with my Olds has been pulling the engine and re-installing after doing the necessary things. And that means sticking to your plan and don't let the MAW's get you.

The best though is the first start After everything has carefully been looked over...and she starts right up . Good stuff, and good luck with your goals.

I'm thinking that's not exactly how you're supposed to install triple carbs.

Hey Pogo, don't blame this on me!
Looks like you have the same stand as me, it seems strong enough. My floor isn't perfectly flat and I found a rear wheel about an 1/8th inch from the floor. A wooden shim made it more solid. But yeah, doesn't steer very well.
I'd challenge you to a race but I think you'd win.

didnt get much done today, since i'm alone its taking a while i know this hood removal isnt pretty but it worked and took my quit a while to snake it thru the garage to the back porch....forgot how heavy these things are, also went out looking for some hardware i dont seem to have for the stand. tomorrow i should get to the converter/bellhouse/starter,if i have no problems.... i remember the starter was a pain to put in with the headers, i think it needs to be removed to clear them

I used the roof truss rope and 4 pulleys. Made a one man job out of it and could lean and tilt it any direction I wanted. Was nice to just pull it all the way up and out of the way till I was done to. I about had a heart attack though when I decided to open the garage door to push the car back, the door came about 3" from bumping the Hood

I'd use bolts to the heads before lifting by an irreplaceable intake.

Anyone can get D heads.

Yeah, sure, the chance of it breaking is slim.
Then again, it is NOT REPLACEABLE

i'm back on track again i got caught up in the daily work etc rat race for few days and no sense trying win the race because as rev. sloan coffin used to say '' if you manage to win the rat race, your still a rat... now i'm back to the pleasure of my car...engine was the usual hassle coming out had to remove the oil filter housing it was getting caught up on the headers, had to make about 300 three point turns with the hoist to get thru the lumpy concrete to the other garage bay... engine on the stand which was also a hassle because the legs of the hoist and this stand ran into each other. preliminary inspection looks good, timing chain nice...no leaks at seals(thought i had a front seal leak), anyway some usual pics...

Pogo, I think something's wrong with your engine. It's not covered in a thick black sludge! What gives?

i'm back at the engine and am somewhat disappointed when removing pistons i have some scored and uneven worn rod bearings as i see it, again this engine has about 10k on a rebuild from 1990 when #7 rod bearing spun... after the rebuild the car sat sometimes a long while before starting but i always removed plugs hand turned the engine etc to ease start up but i have to admit some start ups were a little hard and took a bit to get running but i'm not sure if that is the cause of some of this bearing wear...below are some pics of the worst bearing (cyl # 2) these are childs & albert top quality bearings ...(the crank is machined 20/20 not crossdrilled, mondello oil restrictors and always great oil pressure) the clearance on #2 with plastigage was pretty good(.002) but the bearing in the piston side of the rod is worn down to the copper or indium or whatever... at this stage i want to start with measuring the rod journals and gauging the rod end for out of round (again i didnt like how lose the bearing was in the rod and the bearing tang worn almost like it was close to spinning)....here some pics?
