dash speaker.

need to replace my dash speaker in my 70 olds convert and was wondering if there is a better speaker that fits the stock location. i am using a stock 71 am/fm radio and want the best sound possible. i am tring to keep the inside as stock appearing as possible.

i would just pull out the old speaker, bring it to a car audio store and see what you can find to match. not sure if they make a replacement speaker that size. i know it is an awkward oval shape.

When I had my Delta I just went onto Best Buy and Circut city's web sites and did a "dircet fit" search. Circut City had the correct 3 1/8 size speaker. this was back when CC was still a store.

CC is a web based business now and has pretty good service

A friend of mine made a wooden holder and mounted two small 3in speakers to it. Then mounted it to the original dash hole.

I need the same thing for my '72 with the factory AM/FM stereo. I think I'm going to order from the place in the link below. I haven't done business with them before, but I've read positive things about them.

I went with the speaker from Turnswitch when I upgraded to an original am/fm mono radio for my '71 vert. The speaker is the correct size, but they use a rare earth magnet that is much smaller. You'll get a small block of wood with the speaker that makes it look and install like the original. My only complaint is the poor bass response from the smaller magnet they use. Next time, I'll keep my original speaker and see if it can be reconed.

Also remember to use an 8 ohm speaker with your original radio.

Charlie,
Yes, turnswitch.com is the place to go and as was mentined, you need to go with an 8-10 Ohm speaker when using a factory radio. Most of the speakers sold at the local stores will be 4 ohm and that could damage the radio. I have bought from them for a 69 Cutlass and they are good people to deal with. Also stay with only 2 speakers in total with that factory radio. The guys at turnswitch explain that to me and it has to do with the output transistors in the radio. They can shed more light on it if you need it.

great info brian thanks! gonna put it back to stock and add a factory 8 track i have. i have heard a couple stock gm cars {70-72} that sounded pretty damn good. i think the key is to have good grounds for the whole car to keep interference/static down. besides not really into cranking the music up anymore. must be getting old

I have gone the reconing route and found it to be cost effective, but that's about all. The sound quality is rather poor, even worse than when it was new. In my opinion, the only way you'll get good bass response is to go with a whole new system if you don't mind non original.
