Cutlass Survivor
Cutlass Survivor
I have yet to figure out what a Cutlass Survivor is? I know there is a Cutlass Town Sedan, Cutlass S Hardtop Coupe, Cutlass Supreme Convertible etc. Could someone enlighten me on what a Cutlass Survivor is?
Generally speaking, a "survivor" is a term used to describe a car that is mostly original and has NOT gone through any serious form of cosmetic restoration (such as repainting or seat recoverings). It would be a car that has been repaired / altered only to remain safe, drivable, and reliable.
My 78 Ford is a perfect example of a survivor (there are no resto parts made for it anyway...)

I would think a survivor might be a car that was pretty much parked in a garage with low miles and pretty much never touched since then. I would think it would have all original tires, brake pads, battery, paint, etc.
A lot of our classic cars have some type of restoration done to them and have had many parts replaced. Whether it needed some rust repaired, a new paint job, engine rebuilt, etc. It is really hard to find a classic that has not had any of that type stuff done to it.
Of course I do not think there is a set definition for this term, it is just how one person sees it.

I always figured it to be a car that is in fairly good condition and has never had any major work done to it and is still running.
The word "Survivor" is an official trademarked term used by the Corvette Bloomington Gold organization. They have specifications for what they consider a "Survivor" certified car.
They own the word as it pertains to cars and could probably legally go after anybody that uses it in that context now.
Definition from their site:
"Is over 20 years old.
Can pass a road test over 20 miles
Remains over 50% unrestored, un-refinished, or unaltered.
Retains finishes good enough to use as a color guide for restoration of a car just like it.
Judges inspect only four components: Exterior, Interior, Underhood and Chassis. Cars must pass at least three of these four categories in order to become SURVIVOR Certified."

Trademarks be damned! Up here it refers to a male owner of that particular Olds model : Married over 20 yrs., Can pass the "bedroom road test" over 20 minutes, remains original with less than 50% "upgrades" such as hair plugs, liposuction or Botox, retains at least 50% of the manly characteristics he had when he got married, and retains a "finish"{with or without Viagra},good enough to keep her happy 50% of the time. She will constantly be assessing:Exterior[how you look],Interior[your moral fibre], "Underhood"[...this IS a family oriented site!],and your Chassis[bone structure]...and they say that they're our "better" half!!!...Derek
I don't have any upgrades, all original equipment, no performance additives...yet.
Survivor was actually the group that recorded one of the hokiest songs and videos of all time "Eye of the Tiger" remember the singer's groovy beret?
He really made it big now, he's the singer in the "Real Men of Genius" Bud lite beer commercials, talk about a survivor.
They need one to honor "Mr. Classiscoldsmobile forum dude".
"A man who hears a different drummer drumming", it may be one of those toy wind-up drummer chimps with the little hat but it's drumming.

Good luck with the mod
For example, I bought my 1972 Cutlass with the W29 442 appearance package shown below from the original owner. It still has the original drive train, original paint/stripes, original chrome, original interior, carpet, headliner, radio, spare tire, and floor mats. I'd like to think of it as a survivor.

I'll bet Laura has secretly been adding in some of that Marvel Mystery Oil to your coffee and such!! Heck, it's good for just about everything!
Thats funny right thar and I don't care who you are!!

Yeah, what he said!!

It depends on who you ask. In my opinion, a survivor car is mostly original other than routine maintenance items such as battery, radiator, hoses, belts, alternator, tires, etc...
