Cutlass by numbers

A friend just bought a 1970 Cutlass S that originally came with the 455/TH400. I think it's pretty odd because it's got all you would want in a 442 without being one. Not an SX either.
Anyone has production numbers on it?

The L33 320 HP 2 barrel 455 with dual exhaust was not the same beast as the 365 HP 4 barrel 455 in the 442. The currently available production info does not go into that much depth, to my knowledge. It is a very common upgrade to change intake and carb to the 4 barrel version, and almost as common to upgrade a cam, but, from the factory, it was rated 45 hp less than the 442.

RPO L33 was the 2bbl 455, only available in the Cutlass line through Feb 1970. After that, the L33 was dropped and only the 350 was offered. The L31 4bbl 455 was only available in the Supreme with the SX package.

That's great! Even though the 2 bbl was considerably less desireable, it still means his was likely a very low production car, being that it was cancelled so early on! :-)

The engine isn't currently in it.

Rare for sure and definitely the way I would want a Cutlass S. But it couldn't touch a 442 in performance. 15 seconds flat in the 1/4 vs 14.5 and forget about a W30, it couldn't even smell its exhaust. The beauty in it is that its up to 250 LBS lighter and most will figure its a 350 powered version. So you own a big time sleeper that can get modded relatively easily to match 442 performance ... All the while saving a pretty penny because it doesn't carry the legendary moniker.

Yes, but then, the eterneal question: should he build it back to factory stock spec because it's uncommon (I figure probably between 400 and 800 units produced in total), or go all-out with it? Decisions, decisions...

Its like a turnpike cruiser, low numbers, interesting but why not add the 4bbl, the cam and give it the power it deserves.. no real extra value in cars that were low production but slooow..
