cup holders 1970 442
1970 442 cup holders problem. .
I have a showroom condition 1970 442 W30, 455 CI engine.
My wife wants cup holders, which I dig were she is coming from.
But I am NOT going to drill holes through my stock center consul which runs from the seat back all the way to the fire wall. Starts out about 8" at the back and tapers down to 2" at the firewall.
I bought a couple of cheap *** window types from Murrays. But they are clumsy and the tend to bounce off at any given time.
Has ANYONE researched this and found a solution.
Thanks, Tom

You could make an insert to go in the console "glove box" area so that the cup holders would be removable and only visible with the console door open. The down side is you would lose the console arm rest.

Back in the 80s I had some cup holders that had a flexible rubber flap that inserted into the top of the window channel - Rubbermaid, I thin. They were very secure and stayed in place even with my high school era spirited driving.
This is similar but I have no experience with it:
Cup Holder
I am really surprised that you allow anyone to have an open drink in your car.

I did a quick google search and found this example mocked up for a chevelle (no other hits). Obviously, the cardboard and blue tape is not an ideal look. I’d also want some layer of something between it and the console to prevent rubbing.

Get your shape right,(make its as unobtrusive as possible)
Then transfer the outline to your construction material, or take it to someone who will build it for you.
After its framed, cover it with vinyl. leather, or what ever you want.
Make sure it has something to hold it in place, that doesnt permanently damage the console. (don't want to knock it off accidently)
Only use good, sealed, mugs in thr car

Nothing but sippy cup and a little double stick tape if it has to be done, I mean marriage dependent. I have a fiberglass one that will take a couple of cups but instead take change and dark glasses, comes out when at a show that matters... Tedd

Buy this for $10 and slide it down between console and the passenger side Strato bucked seat. Your wife will be all set. Pushes in and out, drinks don't spill and no mods required.

Turns out if you bend their underlying metal mounting bracket to the same shape as the top of your transmission tunnel then secure with 2” wide Velcro, it’ll hold a couple of drinks nice & secure.
I think I’m using their 2 container “shorty” product in black in front of my 66 98 bench seat. I very rarely have a middle passenger these days, so Velcro-ing to the carpet (glued to the underlayment which is glued to the floor) has worked great. I’m not a big aftermarket guy but a few hidden upgrades like their cup holder and USB outlets from BlueSea Systems have been nice additions.
On the USB thing - in my 98 I hid a 2x USB-outlet under the dash so it’s more less invisible. In my ‘66 Starfire, I stashed 1 2x USB-A in the console glove box. I also hid 2 outlets in the fancy diecast rear ashtrays from a ‘65 Starfire (casting reused in ‘67 Toros). Basically I hogged out the cigar lighter to the width of the USB adaptor and gave it + and - power. Voila - no one smokes and your kids can charge their USB devices in your ancient car!
Fun stuff.

Dude, that is 100% my car. Paint, stripes, convertible, tires, everything. If mine was stolen, I'd say I just found it. I fell in love with the red on black.
Difference, I put a roller rocker mild cam in it, Nickle cadmium pistons 2 over, dual electric fans and a blower. Dynode at 760 HP. Beats the heck out of the stock 370 HP.

I'm at work and can't upload photos, but have you thought of this? The price sucks. But the image might spark an idea on looking somewhere else for the same item at a normal price.
