Crankshaft help?
Crankshaft help?
Hello everyone.
I'm new here and trying to help my non-computer friend who has a 1965 Olds 442.
He bought this car without the engine and transmission. It was a 4 speed car originally.
The engine he's going to use is a 1969 Olds 400 that had an automatic behind it. The hole in the crank is 1.700" in diameter, but the book says the bearing needed is 1.39" in outside diameter.
Is there an adapter available to use a 4 speed trans with this crankshaft?
If so, where would he get one?
Thanks and my apologies if I've posted in the wrong place
Regards
Jim

What he has is a crank that isn't drilled for a pilot bearing. He needs to get that done in order to use the manual transmission - otherwise the manual input shaft will be too long, and shortening that isn't a sustainable solution at all. Below is a thread discussing the issue, as well as containing pictures that show how the pilot bearing hole need to be.

Couple of things. First, as noted, the AT cranks are not drilled for the MT pilot bearing. The pilot bearing hole is much deeper than the shallow recess for the torque converter nose. Also, the 1964-67 motors have a different crank flange bolt pattern than the 1968-1990 motors. You'll need a flywheel to match the 69 motor.
Guys, to me the original post reads like he doesn't have the original driveline - thus, rebuilding the original engine isn't viable, and 'getting another flywheel that fits' becomes 'getting a flywheel that fits'.
You guys are terrific. All this info is really worhtwhile and I appreciate it immensely.
He doesn't have the original engine or transmission, but does have the 69 engine that had an automatic behind it.
Because of all your help, he's probalby going to go with the "Dorman" oilite type bearing and will have the crank drilled while it is still assembled on the engine.
I'll keep you all updated as he progresses
Much thanks
Jim
