Craigslist 1978 Mid-engine 442

I see this car has surfaced again, sorry but have to say the car was ugly when I saw it in the magazine and still doesnt do anything for me. 35,000.00 will buy it, not mine.

Bill Porterfield the builder was an engineer for Oldsmobile. He is also responsible for digging out the info and VIN numbers for the COPO ZL1 Camaros. He tracked down #001, restored and raced it, up until a few years ago.

I remember reading the article back in the day, thinking who would be crazy enough to do all that work ?

Hey, it was the disco era. Lots of custom cars were painted like that then.

Right you are Stefano. Porterfield should be commended as he almost singlehandedly made the '69 ZL-1 collectible. He also had car #3, a yellow double COPO Berger car and "set the market" when he sold it; very few those cars were pricey or famous at that point in time. I was with him at Indy the year the #1 car caught fire in the trailer on the ride to a Super Chevy Show. I have pictures of us trying to pry the melted fiberglass apart to assess the damage. That car was a pioneer in the Nostalgia Drag Car world. It has since been fixed, resold a few times and is in a somewhat private collection.
