Convertible Rear Window ?

A PO had installed a plastic rear window in my 69 convertible. It looked horrible. I picked up a glass window thinking I could install it. No way that was going to work. I know you can purchase the rear window section but, what I wonder is can you install that without removing the entire top?

I don't think so. The rear curtain (the part with the window) is attached to the frame below the top. When installing a new top, the rear curtain is attached first, then the top is attached, covering the rear curtain. I don't know if it would be possible to detach the top from the rear trim stick and bow, swap the rear curtain, then reattach the top.

This is one for a good convertible top shop.

It's true the rear glass section gets installed first but I have to think when these things were designed, a common scenario needed to be addressed: what happens if something/someone breaks the rear glass? Would that automatically require installation of a whole new top? Surely not. I suspect there has to be a way to replace the glass section without replacing the whole top.

I agree. Someone with experience may be able to do this.

The top gets disconnected from the tack strips and flipped forward onto itself and then the rear curtain is removed and then replaced and the top reattached. Done.

OK, I'll put some foam down in the trunk, bring a pillow for my head, a flashlight, and dive in. HUMM, I guess I should order a replacement first.
thanks to all responses.

All of this is done after disconnecting the frame hinge bolts and lifting the lower trim stick, top, rear curtain, and frame out of the well. No need to climb in the trunk.

Do you have the Fisher body manual, or a copy of the folding top removal / installation chapter? I highly recommend getting that info if you don’t currently have it.

Is it because of the style you don't like it or because it is cloudy? Not my era car but a lot of glass rear windows are smaller than plastic windowed cars. I'd check with a shop and see if it can be done at all...Tedd
