You suggested re-using a 307 & I questioned the value of that when other superior engines would bolt right in.

Looks to me & to all others reading this that YOU need the chill pill not me. Take some time to think before you jump on posts Newbie.

Go with the 72 350 Olds

The 72 350 Olds would be the best choice. Those cars would have been perfect back in the day had GM continued the 5.7 instead of dropping down to 5.0.

No mod bolt in. Not sure if your doing and performance updates along with it but the original 2004r would be nice behind it. Pretty sure that car came the bigger 8.5" rear like a GN so it is ready for much more power than it came with.

If it was mine, I'd be really tempted to LS1 the car, but easiest and cheapest and most practical would be the 350 Olds. Have fun with it any way you choose.

OK here is another point of view.
First off what makes the original motor and trans useless??????????
For the sake of argument here lets say the motor/trans can be rebuilt with no money restrictions OK?
The positive is you still have an original motor car

If you put in a 350/403/455 the car will be, dare i say, useless if you try to sell it. By this i mean you need to find a buyer that likes your mods. You can sell an original numbers 442 all day long.
In fact id be willing to say the car is worth more as it stands, not running than if you put a 350/etc into it.

Just look at all the 80's engine swap 442 cars on line for sale, and there are many. They seem to never sell. yet the oem cars do sell.
This also is the trend with Monte SS'S of the same era.

If you want to sell it as is original. I would be a buyer. Shoot me an email. With an engine swap, not interested.

With old collector cars of any era factory oem rules. That is a fact!
I realize these cars have limited value to begin with but moded out you have limited your audience.

Now if this is your lifes dream and intend to keep it forever than all above disregard. My bet is you will sell it some day

Good luck cool car/find

Some awesome advice here...appreciate it
So, here I am sitting in my shop, flanked by two motors....the original engine and tranny, and a 72 350/350. I may be jumping the gun on the 307HO , for I have not even put a wrench into it...the 350 runs, and is a goodcandidate for a overhaul/freshen...I would have to put a lot of time and money into the 307.....ummmmmm, 68442, you have a pm

If you already have the 307 and trans out, why not take it apart and see what's needed and whether it's rebuild able or absolutely wasted or maybe only needs minor stuff? Then go from there. If the 307 combo needs lots of $ to get going and you cant swing it now, then store it away properly so it doesn't get worse and use the 72 350. You can enjoy it and still have the original engine to go back to or sell with it if you decide to sell it later.

Thanks Greg, that is exactly what I will be doing. I will keep all the goodies , like cruise an AC just not hook them up and put in the bare bones 350.......

just an update.
the 307 needs a ton of work....so it will be a long term project.
I opened up the 73 350(I thought it was a 72) and it looks good.
New intake, cam, oil pump and screen and some flat tops will be going in. It is amazing how good the timing gear and chain top and bottom end in this engine are.....kinda of a fun engine build....

Unbelievable how rusty that thing got inside a container. I can only imagine what the inside of that 307 looked like. Smart choice with the 350 swap. Good luck Ted

I think that "SMW 403" found in the lake was in better shape than your motor!

Haha...the rust gremlins fed only on the motor and left the rest of the car alone

Update...

Motor is in ....waterpump on...just waiting on a pulley.
New rad and fuel tank arrived today.
ECM and all associated wiring with AC unit removed and stored away. The engine compartment is starting to look more old school
Delete plate made and painted

I am hoping to put a tranny support brace from a 70 convertable in to accommodate the dual exhaust.

Coming along

Thanks Joffroi! It has been a different kind of resto. Nothing to dislike, we just have good taste. Merry Chritmas to you and yours!

I am sure most know this, but I fitted a trans mount out of a 1970 cutlass convertable into the 1985 gbody. This allows for the dual pipes and headers!

Looks great. Is there a way to tuck the tailpipes higher up and use turn down at the bumper?
