Console restoration

I've purchased a very nice original AT console for a 72 Cutlass/442.
Doesn't need much other than a clean finish. I hear people talk about dyeing and painting. I did my dash insert with an interior paint and looks great.
Asking for advice on refinishing the console.
Thanks,
Steve

Clean it really really good. I used POR 15's Marine Clean and then SEM Soap. adhesion promoter and then SEM paint. My plastic parts came out pretty nice.

I just finish "dying" by console black. It was originally brown. I used SEM Color Coat landau black. I cleaned it using soft soap (kind of like SEM soap) and bartenders friend. After that use the SEM plastic adhesion promoter. Defiantly clean clean clean, if you can, get the SEM soap and or the marine clean like 501paratrooper posted. What I used worked good but if your going to be buying the paint you may as well buy the cleaners. The landau black came out a little glossy, not bad but glossy. SEM makes a clear coat that I may still spray on. That comes in a satin or a low luster coating. I bought the paint and adhesion promoter from Eastwood but TCP Global also has it. I'll try to post some pictures for you to see how it turned out.

Yeah take pics deffanatly. It took me about 1 full can, I think I put on 4 or 5 coats. So i would get 2 cans to be safe. Take your time spraying, don't put it on thick or you'll loss the grain pattern.

If the pictures are stored on your local hard drive, then no need for a URL. Just hit 'Manage Attachments' from within your thread, and click BROWSE in the 'Upload files from your Computer' section. Then, just find the file you want to upload locally, Highlight, click open and then Upload. Hopefully that will work for you.

ok well if you use flickr, right click on the pic in flickr, then click on copy image location. Then when you go to post them in this forum, click on insert images (the yellow square with mountain) and then paste the link. When you first right click on the pic in flickr it will give you size options, choose 500 or 640

You have to go to advanced reply to get the pic options, but the image size has to fit the listed guidelines or it will give an error

Console looks good, you should post the after image too

Couldn't find a local SEM dealer, so ended up with Duplicolor Adhesion promotor and Duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint flat black. Probably 5-6 thin coats. It covered really well and dried fairly fast. The toughest part was removing the chrome bead and re-installing it.

That's about how "shiny" or glossy mine came out.

"The toughest part was removing the chrome bead and re-installing it".

Yeah right! What a pain in the a$$! I actually broke a tab off and I put a couple small scratches in the console putting it back on. They were small so I was able to touch them up easy. Nice job though, the console looks good.

Thanks,
I don't think there is a difference in the gloss before and after. I also broke one of tabs off, but had enough to get bead tight to the console. Also a couple of small scratches, but touched them up. I'm really happy with it.
