column shifter question

I have a 72 cutlass and I was cleaning the interior and the column shifter was caked with dirt. I took the pin out then pulled it out and as I was pulling I felt something disengage and now I can't reinstall the shifter handle. I see a spring in the hole where the shifter goes but I don't know how it goes back in. Am I going to have to take apart the column to fix this? Thanks

I got it. I pulled the collar back which made the spring pull back and I was able to insert the column shifter back in.
